Zack Snyder Speaks on Watchmen Trailer

While James Bond followers are excited for Quantum of Solace to premiere this Friday, Watchmen fans are psyched for another reason:

The second trailer for the graphic novel-based film will debut prior to the movie.

Dark Horizons had a chance to ask Watchmen director Zack Snyder for his take on the initial preview. Here's what he had to say about it:

"I just saw the final version of it this morning... it's a little bit more story, a teeny bit more like a full trailer. This is much more like 'someone's picking off costume heroes'. You'll get a sense of the characters plight you know, 'we were supposed to make the world a better place... what happened to the American Dream'."

Zack Snyder Speaks on Dr. Manhattan's Junk

As Movie Web reports, when Jon Osterman is transformed into Dr. Manhattan in this March's Watchmen movie, well, parents may wanna cover their children's eyes.

Director Zack Snyder and company have made this graphic novel character spring to life in every area possible, including the crotch area.

Dr. Manhattan

Here's what Snyder had to say about making Dr. Manhattan so well-endowed:

It was a weird process. We made a wedge. That’s a visual effects term. It was done in quick time. We would scroll the length up and down. And we wrapped it around a frame. Of course we were worried about the rating. Yeah. We are still nervous about it. It wasn’t so much about taking any inches off.

It was more about how many times you get to see him. We have an R rating right now. So they’ve seen him. Maybe, partly because he is CG, they thought it was okay. It was a really practical decision to make it that length. Then we put him in the thong, which is CG. We basically took his outfit from the book. But, as in the book, we took it off him. Because he just lets it go. He certainly lets it all hang out.

Zack Snyder: Watchmen has Balls

Granted, Zack Snyder is a tad biased about the upcoming movie adaption of Watchmen.

But the film's director certainly has us excited about seeing the graphic novel on the big screen.

"The movie's incredibly self-aware, you can probably tell – but on the other hand, we take it completely seriously," Snyder told IGN. "These are their stories. She needs to get from here to there. They need to beat those guys up. But that's not to say that we don't go what does it mean, what does that mean?"

Comedian Picture

Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars in Watchmen as The Comedian.

Snyder then contrasted his approach to those of other recent comic book blockbuster that attempt to be irreverent and self-aware - but also give in to the formulas of the genre.

"I also think that… Watchmen has balls in the sense that [in comparison], Iron Man and Fantastic Four, though they are in their own way self aware, they drink their own Kool-Aid, and the movie is a movie. It still has a beginning, middle and an end, and makes you care about this guy or that guy. Watchmen is like this nonlinear, all-over-the-place on the edge of being an art movie.

Zack Snyder Shoots Down Watchmen Sequel Rumors

Reporters were treated to a half hour of Watchmen footage yesterday, during a screening at Warner studios in West Hollywood.

According to Sci Fi Wire, director Zack Snyder said the movie will have a running time of two hours and 43 minutes.

The three main clips shows were:

  • An attack on Edward Blake, aka The Comedian (pictured, Jeffrey Dean Morgan), followed by the title sequence that sets up the Watchmen universe.
  • The transformation of physicist Jon Osterman (Billy Crudup) into the superhuman Dr. Manhattan.
  • The assault by Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) and Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) on Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley).

The Comedian Picture

At one point, talk turned to a rumored Watchmen sequel, to which Snyer replied:

"I don't know, I have to be honest. That would be interesting but, there can't be a sequel. There can't be a prequel. Not with me involved, anyway. I have no idea if they could find someone to do it, but it wouldn't be me. That's crazy talk."

Zack Snyder Spills Slight Watchmen Spoilers

At last week's Comic-Con, few men were more popular than Zack Snyder.

The director of next year's Watchmen movie, Snyders talked to the crowd about the incredible maturation of comic-based movies.

"People are interested in comic book movies because they represent mythology and adventure heroes. They allow fantasies to exist in our world," he said. "That worked with a great movie like The Dark Knight, which took it over the top.

You look at Iron Man and you have the same thing, a serious actor like Robert Downey Jr.in a serious portrayal of a guy and then you have this cool fantasy aspect that makes for a great time at the movies."

Silk Spectre, Nite Owl

Zack Snyder has confirmed that Watchmen characters, such as Silk Spectre and Nite Owl, will remain true to their comic book versions.

As for following the Watchmen comic books when outlining the movie, Snyder scoffed at the notion that much would be altered on screen.

"Why would you change it? The film has to exist for a cinema audience the way the comics existed for comic book fans in 1985 and 1986. It's got to be able to comment on how cinematically people relate to superheroes. The cool thing about Silk Spectre is her outfit is overtly sexual.

You can't put that outfit on a Fantastic Four. If I was making a PG 13 movie everybody would be up in arms. This girl is clearly using sexuality as a weapon. That's the point. It's nipply. It's like a dominatrix utfit. That's the fetishistic aspect of it. You have to go all the way."
