Wolverine Photo: Transformed!

It's not easy being Wolverine.

In this photo from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, the character emerges from a vat after he goes through an unusual skeleton coating procedure; it's all part of Wolverine's shady past, which is traced thoroughly in the 2009 summer blockbuster.

Wolverine: Transformed!

As for making the movie, producer Lauren Shuler Donner said this water-tank scene - where Hugh Jackman's character is injected with a substance that makes him impenetrable - wasn't merely make believe.

''We tortured the man," Donner told the magazine. "He is an animal. A normal person could not do that.''

Liev Schreiber Speaks on X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Hugh Jackman is receiving the bulk of attention for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Which makes sense. The actor does play Wolverine and all.

But an antagonist is only as good as his enemy. And that role is played by Liev Schreiber in the upcoming blockbuster.

Wolverine vs. Sabertooth

Below, the actor talks about the experience of filming the movie and portraying Sabertooth:

It was insanely fun. I felt again, I felt very self conscious initially because I knew fans didn't like that idea of me playing Sabertooth. I think I am perceived as a kind of urbane New York … I don't know maybe I've done too many movies with Jewish characters [laughter] and they're like "It's like Woody Allen playing Sabertooth" and I'm like no actually it's not. I'm 6 foot 3 I'm bigger than Hugh Jackman [laughter] I can do this.

Hugh Jackman Explores Idea for Wolverine Movie Sequel

Hugh Jackman is getting a bit ahead of himself.

But the actor spoke to MTV last week about a possible sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He knows where he'd want the film to be based.

"The most intriguing thing to me was the Japan story. I love the Japan story," Jackman said. "I wanted to do the Japan story from around X-Men 2... Can you just picture Wolverine in Japan with the triads and the samurai? It's just genius. Comedically and dramatically, I thought, 'This is awesome'!"

Writers Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's 1982 series about the character was largely set in Japan character; reportedly, the filmmakers considered that location for the first Wolverine film, before saving the idea for a sequel.

"But how can you do that before you explain his origins?" Jackman asked. "If we tried to mix the origin and Japan together, it wouldn't do justice to either. So you can tell by the answer where I'd like it to go."
