Venom Writers Dish on Spider-Man Spin-Off

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing Venom.

The pair is clearly excited about the opportunity to spin-off this Spider-Man 3 villain, as they expressed in an interview with ComingSoon.net.

"Venom is something that we're very fired up to be writing," Reese said. "We have turned in a draft and are waiting to hear back, so it's early in the process. But it's a thrill to be writing 'Venom' for obvious reasons."

As far as what they're planning, Reese did say they have to follow "certain parameters" for the movie.

"Obviously, with a character like Venom there's a ton of stuff to draw from," Reese said. "Then they had specific rules about the villain and the backstory and stuff like that, so there were certain things they wanted us... certain parameters they gave us. But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it's definitely very, very collaborative."

Venom Movie Script Moves Ahead

As rumors of Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 float around the Internet, it's becoming more and more likely that a spin-off for the character of Venom will eventually be released.

According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, Sony has asked Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who also penned Zombieland, to script Venom.

And what about Topher Grace, the actor who played Venom's alter ego Eddie Brock? An insider said:

"Given that comic book artist/writer and action figure maker, Todd McFarlane, who is one of the creators of the Marvel villain, doesn't think a Venom movie could do well with a villain as the central character, my sources think Sony should let Topher Grace, even though he was blown up at the end of Spider-Man 3 (yet a portion of the Venom costume survived), stay in the role because the likable actor could be a a sympathetic evildoer."

Venom Creator Considers Spider-Man Spinoff

A significant question being posed in Hollywood these days is: Who will play the next Batman villain?

As that gets debated, rumors continues to swirl over an actual spin-off for a certain Spider-Man bad guy. Might a movie centered around Venom ever come to fruition?

As one of the most villainous characters in Marvel comics history, could this pile of extraterrestrial goo truly transition to leading man?

“I think Venom could headline a good movie on his own, but it would be tricky and would depend in large part on the script,” Venom’s creator David Michelinie told MTV News.

Naturally, Michelinie argues the success of any Venom movie would depend most on who’s wearing the suit.

In Spider-Man 3, Venom fused with Eddie Brock (portrayed by Topher Grace), but Brock’s climactic and seemingly conclusive death scene leaves an open slot for the symbiote’s host.

“If Eddie’s still dead from Spider-Man 3, said Michelinie,” “the story and the success of the movie would depend almost entirely on the personality of the character who would combine with the symbiote: his motivations, his background, his methodology… his heart and soul.”

Sony Still Considering Venom Spinoff?

After we reported rumors in February about a Venom spin-off from Sony's successful Spider-Man franchise, it looks like we might have a little confirmation courtesy of The Hollywod Reporter.

According to the Reporter, Sony had commissioned a draft of the script for a potential Venom spinoff from Jacob Estes, the writer from the films Mean Creek and The Gift. However, Sony is considering going a different route and is seeking writers for a new draft.

Additionally, Sony is looking for casting beyond Topher Grace who played Venom in Spider-Man 3. They're worried that the actor could not carry the whole film. Luckily since Venom is just a parasite that attaches itself to a person in the Spider-Man movies, they could easily cast anyone to play Venom.

Spinoffs for well established franchises seem to be all the rage these days. Just look at X-Men Origins: Wolverine due out in May without a X-Men 4 even being announced. Though don't worry Spider-Man fans, Sony will still release Spider-Man 4 by 2011.

What do you guys think. Could Topher Grace play Venom in his own spinoff movie?

Venom to Be Unleashed in a Spin-Off?

We already know Spider-Man 4 is in the works.

But might Spider-Man 3 villain Venom be receiving his own spin-off film, as well?

According to IESB.net, Marvel is moving ahead with a new standalone movie based around the dastardly alien symbiote, played by Topher Grace in the last Spider-Man installment. The company has reportedly met with several "A-list writers" to pen a script.
