Tim Blake Nelson Signed on for The Incredible Hulk Sequels

Director Tim Blake Nelson is looking forward to a pair of follow-ups to The Incredible Hulk.

But will star Edward Norton join him in the franchise's future?

“Well, I’m signed on to do ‘Hulk 2’ and ‘3’ whether Edward’s there or not, so it’s not even up to me,” he told MTV. “When I agreed to do ‘Hulk,’ I signed off for two sequels, so it’s a moot question. I certainly hope Edward is on the sequel — but that’s up to Marvel and Edward.”

Confirmed: The Incredible Hulk Sequel

While The Incredible Hulk wasn't exactly a blockbuster at the box office this summer, the Edward Norton vehicle certainly outperformed Eric Bana's The Hulk.

And it looks like that's enough to warrant another go-around for the scientist no one wants to make angry.

“Now we have a Hulk that we can be proud of and that is a better match and fits more with the tone of what had been in our comics and what we want him to be in our films going forward,” Kevin Feige of Marvel told Cinematical.

An Incredible Hulk

The movie maker actually made it sound like a sequel was inevitable, but so were cameos by the Hulk in other Marvel films:

“The truth is that Hulk has had two films in the past five years, and it’s time to give some of the other guys a turn. But certainly what we are doing is suggesting and cross-pollinating the characters between films, and like reading a comic, I’d like to set that expectation that anything can happen - and anyone can pop up - in anybody else’s story. I would expect that people may see the Hulk again soon before he is again carrying his own film.”

Would you go see a sequel to The Incredible Hulk?

Edward Norton: Clueless About Future of The Incredible Hulk Franchise

Considering how displeased Edward Norton was with the final version of this summer's The Incredible Hulk - the actor refused to do any publicity for it after disagreeing with the edits made - it should come as no surpirse that he doesn't know anything about future installments in this franchise.

“The minds of Marvel are sometimes opaque,” Norton told MTV News. “I won’t say [they're] obtuse, but I don’t have any idea what they want to do.”

Actors Looking Forward to The Incredible Hulk Sequel

According to a pair of stars in The Incredible Hulk, Marvel told each of the actors that they'd be part of a trilogy.

That's what Tim Blake Nelson told MTV News at least.

"When I signed on to do the movie, when I went and had my meeting with [director] Louis Leterrier and Gale Anne Hurd, the producer, they said, 'We want you for all three movies,'" said Nelson, who plays Samuel Sterns.

The Incredible Hulk Picture

The Incredible Hulk comes out today. But its stars are already talking about a sequel.

Ty Burrell, who portrays Dr. Leonard Samson, also expects at least one follow-up to The Incredible Hulk. Though Samson is a minor character (as Bruce Banner's psychiatrist and friend), he has ideas for the sequel.

"My pitch would be that he's trying to cure Bruce â€" that he's actually trying to help him, and he makes it worse. And it's his ego that kind of causes the trouble," Burrell said. "If we see the radiation, then I'll definitely have the longer hair. Maybe we'll have to go with a wig. I don't know. [But I'm] voting for green, for sure!"

Reel Movie Reviews: The Incredible Hulk

When we first heard that The Incredible Hulk would be the focus of yet another movie (following the Ang Lee-directed disaster that was The Hulk), we wondered why anyone would go see it.

However, reviews of the Edward Norton vehicle have actually been positive so far. Here's a sampling...

- The Incredible Hulk accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It simply isn't out to accomplish much... -- Cinema Blend

- Though certainly not the dud many were expecting, the new 'Hulk' is not good enough to justify the need for a restart... -- Dark Horizons

The Incredible Hulk

- Much more action-packed and entertaining than the previous Hulk movie... -- Sci Fi Movie Page

- Sharply uneven and structurally messy, new version is only slightly better but decidedly different than Lee's take, a popcorn flick favoring big, loud action and thrilling f/x over plot and characters; makes you curious about Norton's longer, detailed cut... -- Emanuel Levy

Director Already Excited for The Incredible Hulk Sequel

Director Louis Leterrier doesn't need to wait to see the box office tally of The Incredible Hulk before commenting on whether or not he'd be on board to make a sequel.

"I'll do another 'Hulk' movie any day of the week. I love it! I love the character, I love the TV show. I love that he's an anti-hero," Leterrier told ComingSoon.net at the film's premiere.

Considering the "great story and great cast," Leterrier made it pretty clear who would enjoy this superhero flick: If you like movies, you'll like The Incredible Hulk, he said.

Bruce Banner

Edward Norton is Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk.

Liv Tyler Talks About The Incredible Hulk

Liv Tyler plays Betsy Ross in this summer's The Incredible Hulk. She recently spoke to SuperHeroHype about the film.

The actress didn't have a lot to reveal about what to expect from the relationship between her character and Ed Norton's Bruce Banner - but she did watch Ang Lee's The Hulk in order to check out how Jennifer Connelly played the Betsy Ross.

But that's not to say that the new movie will be too similar its predecessor.

Liv Tyler Picture

"There's nothing similar about the story or even really the characters in a lot of ways," Tyler said. "I mostly went back and watched the television show, which was one of my favorite things my mom and I used to watch all the time.

I would say that the essence of that image of the lone figure of [David] Bruce Banner walking down the street alone with his little backpack hitchhiking, the misunderstood hero having to move onto another town was more of the overall feeling for the film but the story is completely different."

The Incredible Hulk opens on June 13.
