Anton Yelchin (upcoming Star Trek, Charlie Bartlett) is in negotiations to star as post-apocalyptic warrior Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Yelchin will play a teen version of Reese, the man who fathered world savior John Connor in the original Terminator film. Christian Bale will play John Connor in the movie, which is set for release on May 22, 2009.

Reese, one of the children who survived a machine-driven nuclear holocaust, befriends Marcus (Sam Worthington), an early edition of the Terminator cyborg played in previous films by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In McG's film, the character is a young version of the one played by Michael Biehn, who traveled back in time in the original to impregnate Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and father the world's future savior.

The film picks up with their son (Bale), now in his 30s, fighting desperately to save a decimated civilization against machines that have taken control.

Sam Worthington will star alongside Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

The Australian actor recently portrayed the lead in the James Cameron-directed Avatar, as that famous director reportedly recommended Worthington to Terminator Salvation director McG.

Worthington will play the role of Marcus, a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.

McG - the man behind the camera for Charlie's Angels and The OC - was recently hired to helm the fourth installment in the Terminator franchise. He recently discussed what fans can expect to see from Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

"[The filmmakers are prepping the picture right now," McG said to The213.net. "The script is largely done, whether or not we're able to prep off of it, obviously we want to continue to work on it, punch it up and we're hoping for an expedient finish to the writer's strike. But I've got my fingers crossed that in a week or two it will be over."

The director confirmed that Christian Bale will portray the heroic John Connor, while also hinting that No Country for Old Men's Josh Brolin might be in the running to play the film's terminator.

McG revealed that Terminator 4 will take place in 2019, post-Judgment Day, but added that "there are indeed some timeline issues" with respect to the continuity established not only by the first three Terminator films, but also now by the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

"We're going to do what we can to respect them all," he said.

According to movie news source, the character of John Connor - already set to be played by Christian Bale - has a minor role in the film, which is meant to kick-start a brand new trilogy of films set in the future of the Terminator world.

The main character of Terminator Salvation is reportedly named Marcus, a man who was "put out of commission" before the machines take over on Judgment Day and is just waking up as the film begins.

The film is set in the future, approximately 15 years before the future scenes of the original Terminator movie. The Connor character appears only peripherally, but will supposedly have a bigger part in the planned second film.

Christian Bale has all but finalized a deal to star in the McG-directed Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the first part of a brand-new trilogy envisioned by producers Derek Anderson, Victor Kubicek, and Moritz Borman.

Bale will portray John Connor. According to Anderson and Kubicek, the movie is set to begin shooting in either Australia or Budapest on March 15, with a budget ''north of $150 million.'' The pair recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about the franchise:

EW: There's been a lot of conflicting information about Bale's role in Salvation â€" including reports that he'll be playing the Terminator himself. Was this just the rumor mill spinning out of control yet again?
Derek Anderson: There's a hugely engaged fan base for this mythology. There are over a million fan sites out there. And they've been really waiting for this next installment, so as soon as word got out [that Bale was being considered], everybody started speculating: Is he the Terminator? Is he John Connor? Is it a new role that we haven't seen in the franchise in the past? Where that came from, we're not really sure. But he was always being considered for Connor.

EW: The other rumor was that Connor was only going to be a supporting role.
Anderson: John Connor is an ongoing, very central character throughout the next trilogy.
Victor Kubicek: Exactly. The mythology, really at the root of it, is the birth of the hero. John Connor is this modern-day, messianic figure that is going to lead our franchise forward.

EW: All right, easier question: Why Christian Bale for John Connor?
Anderson: Well, he's a brilliant actor, clearly.
Kubicek: Absolutely, and I think even more, like I said, this is kind of a messianic figure, somebody who's really complex and unlike a robot. There's this intense humanity. We feel like he really possesses that.

We all know Christian Bale will be flying high on the big screen next summer in The Dark Knight.

But it also now sounds like the intense actor will be starring in the fourth Terminator movie.

Sources state that Bale will appear in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. It's unclear, however, if he'll be taking on the role of John Connor or a new Terminator.
