John Connor Meets a Terminator

As movie fans turn the calendar to 2009, they can truly look forward to the blockbusters on slate this summer.

Leading the group is Terminator Salvation, director McG's latest take on this iconic franchise.

The director assures viewers the he's taking the assignment seriously, as proven by his choice of Christian Bale for the role of John Connor.

''It was important for me to get the most credible actor of his generation to come and add gravitas to what we were trying to achieve,'' McG told Entertainment Weekly. ''I wanted to respect the audience, and be very mindful of the mythology. We take this very seriously.''

More Terminator Movies to Come!

According to Halcyon Co. executives Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, plans are underway for a fifth installment of the Terminator franchise, with Terminator Salvation director McG likely signed on for the next movie.

Christian Bale has signed on in the role of John Connor for all three films in the newly planned trilogy, as next edition of the series is tentatively scheduled for 2011.

Anderson and Kubicek had initially planned to wait until the release of Terminator Salvation this summer before deciding on whether to proceed with the next chapter.

However, positive studio, fan and media reaction to footage from the current film has encouraged the pair to move forward.

"We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this," Kubicek said.

Sam Worthington is Psyched for Terminator Salvation

Sam Worthington's Marcus Wright squares off against Christian Bale's John Connor in Terminator Salvation.

Months before the movie's May 22 premiere, though, the actors are already butting heads. Sort of.

A few weeks ago, Bale casually mentioned that the latest installment in this franchise was "alright." Worthington has now responded to that possible slight:

"From my own eyes and early screening of Terminator Salvation, I can say that what I have seen and what McG is putting together is exciting and a thrilling ride. And with that he is always striving to maintain strong emotional journeys and the truth of this world. I consider the movie beyond, 'alright.'

I consider where they are at in the post production process and [director] McG's constant effort, is to make a movie rooted in diehard mythology but also to advance the series. And I believe McG has something to prove and like any good man is willing to risk and has to put himself on the line - to 'man up' and deliver beyond 'alright!!'"

A Terminator Salvation Blog Update

Terminator Salvation director McG has updated his blog at the movie's official website.

In the latest entry, he says they have finished principal photography and are now in post-production.

Check out excerpts from McG's Terminator Salvation blog below:

The Future So Far...

We wrapped principal photography. Now we're heavy into post. I've already shown early cuts to Christian and Sam. They seem pleased with where the film is headed. Our focus is on story and character, but it's fun diving into the world of visual effects.

It feels like the responsibility of any Terminator film to reinvent the wheel of effects with every outing. The first movie was a stunning achievement in animatronics and practical effects from Stan Winston. The second film brought us liquid metal, which was a true revolution in the effects world. Robert Patrick's (T-1000) head coming apart and putting itself back together again looks as good today as ever.

Possible Terminator Salvation Spoiler: Arnold Schwarzenegger's Voice to Be Heard

Reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger will appear on screen in Terminator: Salvation have been shot down.

However, the film's producer, Moritz Borman, may have started a new rumor when asked if the Governor would make his presence known via voiceover.

Borman, who produced all three previous Terminator movies, told Wired.com:

"Schwarzenegger is governing California. He will not be, as a person, in the film."

The wording above seems to leave the door to some kind of voiceover, right, Moritz?

"I'm not going to answer the question about what we're trying, or what we want, or what we're toying with," said Borman. "It's really up to what fits in the film or not. Maybe his voice, or maybe not.  It's really not settled."

Terminator Salvation: Look to the Title

In the market for a few Terminator Salvation spoilers?

Director McG (pictured) told MTV News that the best advice he can give fans is to analyze the title.

“Even though we may sin ultimately we deserve a second chance,” McG said, referring to the inspiration behind the name of this franchise reinvention.

Just like Termintor 2: Judgment Day, which alluded to the choice a Terminator must ultimately make, Terminator Salvation relates to the actions of a specific character, McG said. He wouldn't specify if that was John Connor (played in the new franchise by Christian Bale).

“Sometimes life is worth living when you make sacrifices so others may benefit,” the director told MTV.

How forbodeing...

Terminator Salvation to Hit The Road?

Over the last couple months, director McG has compared his vision of Terminator Salvation to Batman Begins and Aliens.

In a recent conversation with MTV News, McG gave the network another dark, serious tale with which he'd compare the next Terminator movie.

“I gave all the actors The Road to read to get their heads right bout this sort of existential detachment that living in a post apocalyptic world would bring,” McG said. “We’re in a very large post apocalyptic environment. The bombs have gone off and there’s very little left. People are wandering through lonely landscapes."

Cormac McCarthy’s book won the Pulitzer Prize and is being made into a movie itself this fall.

The Road follows a father and son journeying together through an ash covered landscape, years after a worldwide disaster that killed almost everyone else on earth. It’s brilliant, depressing and morbid.

McG thinks John Connor can relate to all those emotions.

“I think the first two pictures took those ideas so seriously,” McG said of the themes of inescapable destiny and dread. “We wanted to make sure we did that [as well].”
