New Stark Trek Movie Flies to 2009

Movie fans will have to wait a few extra months to be taken back to the final frontier.

Paramount Pictures has shifted the release date of its upcoming Star Trek movie from Christmas 2008 to May 8, 2009. The J.J. Abrams-directed film is still in production.

Variety reports that the film's release date shift "was part of a major reshuffling to the studio's release calendar, as well as DreamWorks' release calendar. Studio insiders said Star Trek has the potential to gross more in May than in December."

The publication points out that, as of right now, only two other films are slated for release in May 2009: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Shutter Island.

Eric Bana Touches on Star Trek Role

Eric Bana will be portraying the character of Nero in the upcoming Star Trek remake from J.J. Abrams. The actor recently talked about the role with Comingsoon.net...

You've said that your character Nero will only be making a cameo in the upcoming "Star Trek," but isn't he the main villain? What can you say about that?
Bana: Well, I guess he kind of is, but I guess what I mean is that in the context of the roles I usually do, the weight is firmly on other areas, you know what I mean? It's not one of those roles where you're carrying the movie, is what I'm saying.

I feel like I'm very much in a supporting role, not one of the main guys. So "cameo" is a way of saying I don't feel like, as I am in this film or some other films, where you're clearly carrying a lot of the film. It's a luxury to not be in that position. It's nice to be offered a part like that.

Jennifer Garner: Make Me a Klingon!

Jennifer GarnerJennifer Garner hearts J.J. Abrams. He was in charge of making the actress a star, thanks to their hit show Alias.

As a result, Ben Affleck's wife has nothing but good things to say about the director:

"He rocks; I would do anything for him," she said. Now, as his highly-anticipated Star Trek reboot continues to film, Garner wants to go where few actresses have gone before.

"I just want to be a Klingon in the movie," the Juno star pleaded, insisting that she'd even take a cameo. "I just want to walk through [the frame] as a Klingon."

Regardless of whether or not this dream comes true, the actress said she's something of a Trekkie herself, and can't wait to see what J.J. brings to outer space.

"J.J. is kind of like Juno," she laughed, referencing the quick-witted character played by Ellen Page in her current movie. "It's just his energy, his personality, and he's as smart as anybody I've ever met. Both funny and nice."

Cloverfield to Feature Star Trek Trailer

The flick will feature a preview for the upcoming Star Trek film.

Writer/director Matt Reeves has already seen it.

"Way back, J.J. was like ‘When Cloverfield comes out, Star Trek will be on it,'" Reeves said of his movie, which will hit theaters on January 8. "I was like ‘That's a terrific idea; that's exciting'. So, I've known for a long, long, time that was their plan, and I've just recently seen bits of the teaser. I think it's amazing, and it looks pretty incredible."

As MTV reports, Abrams is a producer on Cloverfield, and one of the main driving forces behind its unorthodox advertising campaign.

Reeves, meanwhile, has been busy at work attaching trailers for his friend's much-anticipated movie on to the front of his own.

"I think people are going to be very excited," he teased. "It's a teaser, you know, it's a teaser trailer. But still, I was like ‘Wow!' Just the scope of it, the scale of it, you just look at it and it's so elegantly done... this is a great way to reboot the franchise, and get people excited about something new."

Karl Urban Speaks on Star Trek Movie

Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie, was recently asked by TV Guide.com: about how closely this new version will mirror the classic films:

"The movie is very, very faithful to the spirit of the original series and the characters that were created in the '60s," Urban said.

For example, Urban's Bones "is the lovable, irascible humanist that he has always been [and] a good friend of Jim Kirk."

That said, the actor believes "J.J. is going to reinvigorate this franchise in a fresh and exciting way."

So, can Star Trek fans look forward to young Bones delivering one of his trademark "I'm a doctor, not a [blank]" lines?

"I can't say!" Urban replied with a laugh. "I would love to tell you, but... I'm not allowed to say."
