JJ Abrams hints at Khan for Next Trek

"KHAAAAAAAAANN!" Who could forget hearing William Shatner's voice echoing through deep space? Nicholas Meyer's 1982 sequel Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan is hailed as being the pinnacle of what the Star Trek franchise has to offer. With such a stout reputation, it's only natural for JJ Abrams to want to update the character.

Ricardo Montalban as Khan!

Abram's reinvention of Star Trek relies on taking the audience to an alternate universe, allowing virtually every adventure in Trek history to be rediscovered. JJ himself opened up about what may be in store for the Star Trek sequel.

"Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise," said Abrams.

"While I don't want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we've seen in the past, and I don't think any of the other writers or producers are interested in just rehasing or throwing characters in for the sake of it... Khan is certainly the most obvious one in the history of the series for me... I do think that there are... nothing is off limits in terms of what we're discussing."

While it's not a confirmation, it seems JJ is keen on bringing the legendary villain back to the big screen. The next question is, who could fill Ricardo Montalban's shoes?

Spock Talks Star Trek Sequel

IGN caught up with Zachary Quinto on the set of Heroes this week.

The website spoke to Sylar/Spock and asked him about the inevitable sequel to this summer's blockbuster hit, Star Trek.

"Nothing official," said Quinto. "I know that JJ and Damon and Bob and Alex are working on the script right now. And I think that's a process that will take them awhile. And I think they're really smart and they're doing it on their own terms as much as they can, so we'll go back to work when they tell us to, basically."

Rumors state that the Star Trek sequel will be released in 2011.

Chris Pine Dishes on Star Trek Movie and More

When will the Star Trek sequel hit the theaters?

Will the entire cast return for it?

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times this week, Chris Pine opens up about these issues and more...

Star Trek Sequel Talk from Writer

At this week's Television Critics Association press tour panel for Fringe, writer Alex Kurtzman talked at length about the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

Kurtzman, who writes for the Fox drama and who penned this May's Star Trek movie, said:

"The approach for us on the first movie was how do we please fans and how do we please people who have no relationship to Trek. It's a question we have to keep asking ourselves constantly. It's a very tricky formula because it's hard…

A lot of what makes diehard Trekkers really focused on Trek are those details that can sometimes be alienating to people that are not on the inside. So that leads us back to things of what are the big themes? Emotional ideas? That's a language that everybody speaks."

Other sequel notes from Kurtzman included:

  • The sentence "He's dead, Jim" will likely show up in part two.
  • Greg Grunberg wants to play villain Harry Mudd.
  • Damon Lindelof will join the writing team for the sequel.

Said co-writer Roberto Orci:

"We're going to come up with a story together, obviously in consultation with J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan [Burk]. And then we're going to write it up together, the story, us and Damon. And then Alex and I will write the script."

Star Trek Sequel Talk Heats Up

With a Star Trek sequel already planned for 2011, fans are already buzzing about what the follow-up to this summer's hit could be focused on.

According to screenwriter Roberto Orci, the answer is: anything.

"I think the major lesson we learned is that fans were willing to accept differences and surprises, provided that they were somehow echoes or inspired by canon," Orci said to SCI FI Wire "We still have to be true to Star Trek the next time around, but we've also been blessed with being able to be unpredictable. And that doesn't mean we can just be shocking for no good reason and just throw everything away. It still has to echo everything that Star Trek has been."

It may change any second, but at the moment, the writers don't have a story or a premise in mind for a sequel.

"We have agreed to write another one," Orci said. "We're going to start thinking about it any second now. But we're still just having a mental sorbet before we jump back in. And, you know, just seeing all the reactions to the movie. We want to make sure we take it all in and really figure out what worked and what didn't and proceed from there. But now that we have... an open canvas... anything can happen."

A Clip from Star Trek

We're exactly one month away from the release of Star Trek.

The movie explores the origins of James T. Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise from the original Star Trek series.

Chris Pine takes on the role of the ship's captain - and, as you can see from this clip, he's got Kirk's cool confidence down perfectly:

Star Trek Sequel Aims for 2011 Release

Star Trek sequel talk is already heating up.

According to Variety, director J.J. Abrams has agreed to produce the inevitable follow-up. It will be written by Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof and Fringe creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

Orci and Kurtzman collaborated on the screenplay for the upcoming Star Trek reboot, which beams into theaters May 8.

The pair is hoping to have a draft of the sequel complete by Christmas, with the goal to get the cameras rolling in time for a summer 2011 release.

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month," Kurtzman said. "With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."
