Spider-Man 4: Dennis Carradine is Back

According to Superhero Hype, Michael Papajohn (the actor, not the mediocre pizza chain) appeared at a panel at Wizard World Philadelphia and told fans that he would reprise his role as Dennis Carradine in Spider-Man 4.

Carradine was the carjacker that allegedly killed Uncle Ben in the original Spider-Man, only for them to tell us it was his partner Flint Marko / Sandman to commit the crime in Spider-Man 3.

We're hoping this means Carradine might become a villain and we're not doing yet another flashback to a scene that's been beaten worse than any horse we've seen.

Spider-Man 4 Production, Shooting Update

Contrary to previous reports, it appears unlikely Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 will NOT be shot back-to-back. Franchise director Sam Raimi shot down the rumors in an interview with Ain't It Cool News this week.

"No one's talked to me about making part 5 at this moment. Right now I'm hoping to make part 4," he said.

As for when Spider-Man 4 might start shooting, Raimi referred to it as "a never-ending process," adding:

"Basically we are talking about the story right now, shortly artists will come on and I'll start giving them shots to draw. We are supposed to start talking to a production designer soon, so it will just keep getting larger and larger."

Sony Pictures and Marvel recently announced a May 6, 2011 release date for Spider-Man 4. This would mean production would need to commence some time next year.

Sam Raimi Remains Hush on Spider-Man 4 Villains

Sam Raimi, who will direct Spider-Man 4, recently spoke to Sci-Fi Wire about the upcoming blockbuster.

He said the script ought to be complete within a few months. However, when asked about the bad guys that will appear in the fourth installment of the franchise, Raimi remained mum:

I'm not at liberty to discuss the villains yet. I think I have to wait till the finished screenplay, and then it'd really be up to Sony Pictures and the producers to determine when they want to release that information. To them, it's usually a big, a big, big thing, a big moment where they want to present the villain with the proper respect or fear that he or she deserves.

J.K. Simmons Speaks on Spider-Man 4

It's official:

Spider-Man 4 will begin shooting in 2010.

J.K. Simmons told MTV that he’ll continue in the role of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson in the fourth film in the franchise.

“We’ve definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies,” the actor said. “The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3, is just exactly right. Like be the wolf. Come in, blow in, do a week, blow out, be the comic relief, and hit the road. And let Tobey and everybody else do the heavy lifting.”

J. Jonah Jameson will have plenty more to wrath to reveal in Spider-Man 4.

Sam Raimi Considers Villain for Spider-Man 4

With all the buzz surrounding possibilities for the next Batman villain, let's not forget about Spider-Man 4.

Sam Raimi recently told Empire Magazine that he has a character in mind to take on Peter Parker in this franchise's next installment.

"I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius... He's really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural," Raimi said.

Morbius

A bit of background for non-comic book geeks:

Morbius was a Nobel-prize winning biochemist. He attempted to cure a rare blood disease with a combination of vampire bats and electroshock therapy... leading to vampire-like characteristics, as well as a really bad headache.

David Lindsay-Abaire to Write Spider-Man 4

Spider-Man 4 has found a new writer - and he has quite an impressive resume.

Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, who who won a Pulitzer in 2007 for his drama "Rabbit Hole," will pen Spider-Man 4 for Columbia Pictures. He replaces James Vanderbilt, who wrote a previous draft of the film.

Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have agreed to return as director and star, respectively, in the fourth installment in this franchise.. Kirsten Dunst is also expected to return for the follow-up.

Elizabeth Banks: Likely Out of Spider-Man 4

Count Elizabeth Banks out of Spider-Man 4.

As the actress makes the publicity rounds for Zack and Miri Make a Porno, she tole CHUD that a small part such as Betty Brant (a secretary at The Daily Planet) would be unlikely to be included in the next installment of the franchise.

"They don't need Betty Brant. It's purely, at this point - and I don't think they see it this way - it's kind of a favor at this point," Banks said of the role.

Betty Brant

Banks also shared an interesting story of how she got started in franchise:

"The story of Spider-Man is that I auditioned to play Mary Jane Watson and Laura Ziskin said 'She's too old.' It's fine. I'm a lot older than Kirsten Dunst, so I get it. I'm not much older than Toby, but... But I got it back then. And I was a nobody. I had no expectations of even being in that movie.

The casting director called and said, 'As a consolation prize essentially do you want to be Betty Brant?' So it started out as a consolation prize and it's become a favor."

Sam Raimi Focuses on Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5

We know Tobey Maguire is on board for Spider-Man 4 - and Spider-Man 5!

But what about the status of Kirsten Dunst?

Director Sam Raimi told MTV that he's certainly in favor of this actress reprising her role as Mary Jane.

“Kirsten, I’d love to work with her again,” Raimi said, making it sound as if current plans to include Dunst for Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 aren't finalized, despite recent statements that she wants to remain with the franchise. “I hope she’ll be written into it. I couldn’t imagine making one without her, and I think she’s an important part of the movies.”

Raimi also responded to fans that wish to see Dylan Baker’s story line come to fruition. Will that take place in one of these films?

“He’s a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard’s story will be told,” the director said. “I don’t know if it will be this one or not. I just don’t know. I’m definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don’t know who the villain is yet.”

Count Kirsten Dunst in for Spider-Man 4

Thanks to an incredible deal, we know that Tobey Maguire will be up to his old web-spinning ways in Spider-Man 4 (and Spider-Man 5).

Now, Kristen Dunst has confirmed to MTV that she'll be a part of this franchise's fourth installment.

“I’m in,” the actress said simply, not elaborating on any plot details for her character of Mary Jane.

Spider-Man 4 is set to be released in May 2011.
