Don't just take our word for the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in a movie about Sherlock Holmes.

Take a look at the Iron Man actor on the set of this upcoming Guy Ritchie movie:

Downey as Sherlock Holmes

A release date for Downey's Sherlock Holmes movie has not been set; Jude Law will co-star as Watson.

With Tropic Thunder still making money in theaters, and Iron Man released this week on DVD, life is great for Robert Downey Jr.

This actor, who plays the title character in the upcoming feature film Sherlock Holmes, talked to reporters yesterday at the film’s pre-production press conference at Freemasons Hall on Wednesday in London. He sounds excited about the project.

“I think me and [director Guy Ritchie] are well-suited to working together,” Downey Jr. said. “The more I look into the books, the more fantastic it becomes. Holmes is such a weirdo.”

Sherlock Star

Mark Strong Cast in Sherlock Holmes

Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, which comes out next month, is about to make Mark Strong a major Hollywood star in the way Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels made Jason Statham one.

It comes as no suprise that Ritchie has already signed up Strong to be in his next movie based on Sherlock Holmes according to Comingsoon.net.

Sherlock Holmes still has no release date and there's no word on what part Strong will be playing.  The iconic role of Holmes has already be cast to Robert Downey Jr.

This year is going to be an amazing year for Strong with RocknRolla, Babylon A.D., Good, and Body of Lies all coming out.

Guy Ritchie Readies for Sherlock Holmes Movie

Guy Ritchie - the writer/director behind RocknRolla - recently spoke to USA Today about his impending Sherlock Holmes movie, which will star Robert Downey Jr.

The film will be based on Lionel Wigram's comic book, as the new Holmes is expected to be more adventuresome than ever, taking advantage of his skills as a boxer and swordsman. We weren't even aware he possessed those skills.

"It will be a very big production, visceral and intellectual," Ritchie told the newspaper. "His brilliance will percolate into the action."

The movie, scheduled for release in 2010, will be set in the olden days, Ritchie said. However, the emphasis will be as much on Holmes' physical prowess as it is on his keen powers of deduction.

"His intellect was as much of a curse as it was a blessing," the director added. "He was a deeply layered character."

Robert Downey Jr. Dishes on New Sherlock Holmes Movie

As previously announced, Robert Downey Jr. will take a break from the iconic role of Tony Stark to take on another iconic part in his next movie: Sherlock Holmes.

The actor spoke to MoviesOnline about the project:

It’s set in 1891. The original dossier of Sherlock Holmes, in additional to everything we know, was also that he was a bare knuckle boxer and a master of Baritsu which is a very nebulous martial art which I love and so we’re going to punch up what was missing from all the Sherlock Holmes we’d seen which is the fact there were these huge chase and action sequences that occurred and were probably just a little too expensive to do with Basil Rathbone for TV.

So we’re going to really bring up the scale of it and make it fun and accessible. I’ve seen a lot of kid-friendly movies and a lot of super dark movies all come out and do well this summer and I think we need less darkness and more entertainment. So I’m hoping we can do a very entertaining and accessible movie.

Robert Downey Jr. Finalizes Deal for Sherlock Holmes Movie

Robert Downey Jr. is in final talks to star as Sherlock Holmes in a film to be directed by Mr. Madonna himself, Guy Ritchie.

The Warner Bros. movie, due to start shooting this fall, will depict Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's hero in a less stuffy vein than in his previous incarnations.

We'd imagine, though, that this flick will be far more intense than the Columbia Pictures recently-announced version, which will be produced by Judd Apatow and star Sacha Baron Cohen as the super sleuth, along with Will Ferrell as his sidekick, Dr. Watson.
