Paranormal Activity Scares Away Jigsaw

The producers over at Twisted Pictures must be sweating. With a fraction of the budget and a much smaller theater presence and fan base, Paramount Pictures' micro-budget indie hit Paranormal Activity has dethroned the Saw franchise as the king of the Halloween movie season.

Paranormal Activity night vision

Spreading to about 2,500 screens this weekend, Oren Peli's supernatural thriller outperformed Saw VI, which opened in over 4,000 screens. Paranormal Activity earned $22 million, bringing it's 31-day total up to about $62.5 million, as compared to the Saw sequel's meager $14.8 million.

Have audiences finally had enough of Jigsaw? It's too early to tell, but the extremely lackluster performance of Saw VI's opening weekend could spell doom for the franchise, even though there are two more sequels in the works, in 3-D no less.

It just goes to show that you don't need a lot of money to make a film that audiences respond to. Paranormal Activity was shot for the paltry sum of $11,000, while Saw VI cost an estimated $11 million.

Project Greenlight Winners Talk About Their New Saw

Remember the last season of Project Greenlight? No? Well, the guys that won the writing portion of the contest are Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston, for the film Feast. You may have seen their names attached to several other projects, such as The Collector and the last two Saw movies.

ShockTillYouDrop.com recently sat down with the writing duo to discuss their latest shriek show, Saw VI.

It seems that their first two attempts were merely beta tests for this third installment, so claims Patric Melton: "This is our third one out. With fourth and fifth film we were getting our footing on what the fans want. What makes a really good Saw movie, so I think with our third, we have a good grasp on that."

Asked about what kind of gore we're in for with the sixth installment, the writers didn't want to tell a lot. Marcus Dunston has this to say about the traps in Saw VI: "Well, I know we've been comparing to the others and we'll say they're the most vicious of the series"

"They're definitely bigger and involve more people," adds Melton.

"Once again, learning from previous entries, we're trying to refine the traps we've always loved. This one got under my skin, why don't we turn it up to 12?" replies Dunston.

"We regulate the escalation, too. So the film ends on the best trap," concludes Melton.

Saw Series Gets Three Dimensional

Okay, so Saw VI hasn't even hit theaters yet, and the producers over at Twisted Pictures are already telling us to get ready for not one, but probably two more installments. And this time, the terror will be leaping off the screen!

Tanedra Saw

No matter what you may think of the Saw franchise, it's definitely this decade's Friday the 13th series, with a new film pumped out each year. Each film keeps making a nice profit, which keeps the wheels turning at Twisted Pictures, and Lionsgate, the Saw series distributor.

Next year, fans will have another thing to be afraid of. No, not another Jigsaw, but Jigsaw in 3-D! "'Saw,' just by the way it's shot, lends itself to being a 3-D movie," says producer Mark Burg.

Twisted Pictures apparently did a test with the original Saw, converting certain scenes to 3-D using new software that replicates the stereoscopic effect from regular 2-D footage. The test was so successful that they've decided to make the next big leap.

"We're not going to transfer "Saw VII," but we'll actually shoot it in 3-D," Burg continues. "We want to be able to build the sets in a way that takes advantage of depth. We're going to design traps to come out at you."

"When we go to 3-D on the Saw films, it's like an anti-3-D movie," adds writer Patrick Melton. "We're now in a box, and it's going to make the house of horrors come to life even more. Now we have a lead character and you're going to be inside this place with him and when things come out at him, they'll also come out at you."

Sounds like a creepy diorama, and they're not stopping at seven. "We have the story threaded through 'Saw VIII,'" says Burg. "Where it goes beyond that, I couldn't tell you."

As long as people keep paying, they'll keep making Saw films. Even though I tuned out after part 3, I'm still open to giving part 3-D a chance.

Saw VI opens October 23.

Twisted Pictures Buys New Saw

Twisted Pictures is taking over the long-standing Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Variety reports. The production company is currently in talks with Lionsgate to partner up on new Chainsaw films. Lionsgate has distributed every Saw film, including Saw VI, which hits theaters October 23rd.

Twisted's plan for a new Chainsaw movie is apparently to contemporize the storyline and reboot the franchise again, this time in 3-D. Obvious questions of over-milking a B-horror franchise to cash in on a rediscovered fad are sure to abound... Stephen Susco of The Grudge fame will pen the script.

At least they're getting the Chainsaw away from Michael Bay. Texas Chainsaw Massacre had previously been rebooted at New Line with a remake and a prequel produced by Bay's Platinum Dunes.

Twisted Pictures is working out the deal for multiple films. Well, the regular Saw franchise can't keep going forever... or can it?

Maybe the plan will be to have a crossover! They did it with Freddy and Jason. They did it with Alien and Predator. Imagine that: Jigsaw Vs. Leatherface, in your face in 3-D! Well, we can dream, can't we?

Saw VI Posters Hype Blood Drive, Scary Nurse

The Saw movie franchise wants you to "Give 'Til It Hurts."

While the series of horror movies certainly have its share of critics - those that claim the films are too gory - it's difficult to criticize the annual blood drive the producers sponsor. Hyped by a unique nurse and new set of posters, the event benefits the Red Cross.

Shawnee Smith to Star in Saw VI

Saw VI is moving closer and closer to production.

Here's what Twisted Pictures producer Mark Burg had to say about the project:

"Shawnee Smith [as Amanda] is [back] in 'Saw VI.' There are several new characters. Also, this movie is a lot more violent than the previous five. Lastly, we have traps that pit victims against each other like the opening of 'Saw V.' Could be the best script yet!"

Kevin Greutert will direct the horror movie. It will begin filming in Canada on March 30 and will be released in October.

Release Date Announced for Saw VI

Saw VI is a go.

Kevin Greutert, who has served as the editor on all five previous installments in the series, will direct Saw VI, which has already received scheduled an October 23, 2009 release date.

"We always try to think of ways to blow the audiences' minds, but the audience is always trying to stay one step ahead of you, which makes it that much harder," the filmmaker said in a recent interview.

There's no end in sight to the Saw franchise. Does that scare you?

Added Greutert, who has been named the director for Saw VI:

"If it was the first in a series you really wouldn't know what to expect, but now the expectations for something unexpected to happen are so high, it makes it a lot harder. The only way to do it is to live and breathe it. I was just talking to Eric, the guy who plays Eric – Mark Rolston. I've got hundreds and hundreds of pages of every conceivable variation of what we can do with Saw VI and beyond.

One of those will hopefully be the thing that we get. But it's a matter of thinking through every possible thing we can imagine. And of course creating new characters that we think people will like and can contribute to the drama – that's important as well."
