Robert Downey Jr.: No Comment on Iron Man 2 Cast Shake-Up

With Iron Man 2 making headlines for all the wrong reasons - following the controversial replacement of Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in the role of Colonel Rhodes - star Robert Downey Jr. is trying to stay diplomatic.

Here's what he had to say about the cast shake-up:

"I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very very much. That’s all I’ll say because I haven’t talked to him yet."

The actor added:

"I’ve always admired Don [Cheadle]. It’s one of those situations where I still don’t quite know what happened or why. Here’s what happens too: things happen and you wind up commenting on them before you’ve actually talked to the people and it’s in poor taste."

Robert Downey Jr. is Sherlock Holmes

Don't just take our word for the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in a movie about Sherlock Holmes.

Take a look at the Iron Man actor on the set of this upcoming Guy Ritchie movie:

Robert Downey Jr. Dishes on Sherlock Holmes Movie

With Tropic Thunder still making money in theaters, and Iron Man released this week on DVD, life is great for Robert Downey Jr.

This actor, who plays the title character in the upcoming feature film Sherlock Holmes, talked to reporters yesterday at the film’s pre-production press conference at Freemasons Hall on Wednesday in London. He sounds excited about the project.

“I think me and [director Guy Ritchie] are well-suited to working together,” Downey Jr. said. “The more I look into the books, the more fantastic it becomes. Holmes is such a weirdo.”

Sherlock Star

Robert Downey Jr. is a Changed Man

Coming off Iron Man, currently starring in Tropic Thunder, and planning a Sherlock Holmes remake, Robert Downey Jr. is a new man.

Just ask the actor himself, as Rolling Stone did when the magazine brought up a lofty quote the star uttered a couple years ago.

"Puh-leaze! That guy is someone who is a foulmouthed liar who thinks he sounds really hip."

Robert Downey Jr. Seriously Disses, Dismisses The Dark Knight

It's a super hero showdown!

In a new interview with Moviehole, Robert Downey Jr. went off on The Dark Knight. It's safe to say that the man behind the suit of this summer's other major comic book film, Iron Man, thinks the latest Batman chapter is overrated.

“My whole thing is that I saw The Dark Knight. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’

I loved [Christopher Noalan's] The Prestige, but didn’t understand The Dark Knight. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so fucking smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what?

Fuck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”

Robert Downey Jr., seen here in character in Tropic Thunder, holds nothing back in his critique of The Dark Knight.

Robert Downey Jr. Dishes on New Sherlock Holmes Movie

As previously announced, Robert Downey Jr. will take a break from the iconic role of Tony Stark to take on another iconic part in his next movie: Sherlock Holmes.

The actor spoke to MoviesOnline about the project:

It’s set in 1891. The original dossier of Sherlock Holmes, in additional to everything we know, was also that he was a bare knuckle boxer and a master of Baritsu which is a very nebulous martial art which I love and so we’re going to punch up what was missing from all the Sherlock Holmes we’d seen which is the fact there were these huge chase and action sequences that occurred and were probably just a little too expensive to do with Basil Rathbone for TV.

So we’re going to really bring up the scale of it and make it fun and accessible. I’ve seen a lot of kid-friendly movies and a lot of super dark movies all come out and do well this summer and I think we need less darkness and more entertainment. So I’m hoping we can do a very entertaining and accessible movie.

Sherlock

Can you envision Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes?

Robert Downey Jr. is Like a Rolling Stone

Iron Man is still making money.

Tropic Thunder comes out next week.

He's signed up for a new Sherlock Holmes movie.

Needless to say, Robert Downey Jr. is a busy man, as he explains in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.

On his crazy schedule since Iron Man: “Right now, my BlackBerry is literally overloading and crashing, and the phone is never not ringing. It’s crazy. Like a Super Bowl. Like a landslide. Like nothing I’ve ever experienced.”

Like a Rolling Stone

On moving forward in his life: “I’m such a work in progress at the moment, it’s crazy, and life wants me on edge, I swear to you. But as long as I don’t forget the past, I’m cool. One must always be mindful, just like you might forget that old girlfriend who tried to slit your throat, but she’s really still hot. If you remember the stitches more than you remember the pussy, you’re going to be just fine.”

Robert Downey Jr. Sets Goals for Iron Man 2

It's a day of news about sequels, as we've already provided insight about Transformers 2 and Goonies 2.

Now, Robert Downey Jr. is opening up about the next Iron Man installment. He recently outlined the idea behind this sequel to iesb.bet:

“Our goals are more of the same. The idea that he said he’s Iron Man in part 1…it’s one thing to say it, and it’s another thing to actually evolve to the point where you can live in a heroic fashion.

You know, they say, ‘The superhero movie always needs to follow…’ and I said who is that guy? Get him out of here! We want to do what worked for us last time, in a way that evolves.”

Tony Stark Pic

It's true. One of our favorite things about Iron Man was the way the movie moved away from superhero cliches towards something more satisfying: what was logical for the character, as oppoed to the genre.

“We’re talking about a guy who is put in an extraordinary circumstance, and the people that are around him, and how that creates a sense of family, and how that disrupts whatever forces that we have to say that are working [in his life]," the star of the upcoming Tropic Thunder said.

"I like the idea of an Iron Man 2 that you’re able to understand various points of view. You’re able to touch on some subjects that are a lot more far reaching, while still grounding it in entertainment."
