More Paranormal Activity on the Way?

Hot on the heels of reports that the micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity took down the Goliath of Halloween, Saw VI, on its opening weekend, Paramount Pictures is making noise about a possible sequel.

Paramount chairman Brad Grey told  the LA Times, "We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do Paranormal 2 and we're looking to see if that makes some sense."

And why shouldn't they? Paranormal Activity, which only cost around $11,000 to make, is on its way to earn around $100 million in the US box office alone.

Paranormal Activity Scares Away Jigsaw

The producers over at Twisted Pictures must be sweating. With a fraction of the budget and a much smaller theater presence and fan base, Paramount Pictures' micro-budget indie hit Paranormal Activity has dethroned the Saw franchise as the king of the Halloween movie season.

Spreading to about 2,500 screens this weekend, Oren Peli's supernatural thriller outperformed Saw VI, which opened in over 4,000 screens. Paranormal Activity earned $22 million, bringing it's 31-day total up to about $62.5 million, as compared to the Saw sequel's meager $14.8 million.

Have audiences finally had enough of Jigsaw? It's too early to tell, but the extremely lackluster performance of Saw VI's opening weekend could spell doom for the franchise, even though there are two more sequels in the works, in 3-D no less.

It just goes to show that you don't need a lot of money to make a film that audiences respond to. Paranormal Activity was shot for the paltry sum of $11,000, while Saw VI cost an estimated $11 million.

Paranormal Activity is apparently this generation's Blair Witch Project, a micro-budget horror film that has hit a nerve and is building steam. It also helps that it's being distributed, albeit slowly, by Paramount Pictures.

In an age where torture porn like Saw and Hostel seem to be dominating the horror landscape, a return to old-school psychological terror seems welcome.

ShockTillYouDrop.com recently sat down with the film's director, Oren Peli to talk about the resounding success the film has had so far, as well as his future film plans. Check it out here!
