Robin Hood Gets Its King

The now untitled Robin Hood movie starring Russel Crowe once had a title.  It was Nottingham.  Now the film has its King.

Danny Huston will play King Richard, aka Richard the Lionheart.  Huston was last seen in the summer blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood project is curently shooting on location in the UK.  We can only hope they settle on a name for our reporting purposes.

William Hurt Cast in Untitled Robin Hood Movie

Veteran actor William Hurt - most recently seen in season two of Damages - will star in the Ridley Scott-directed untitled Robin Hood movie, originally titled Nottingham.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hurt will portray William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke.

Reports have described the project as a retelling of the origins of the story's main characters. It will also star Russell Crowe (as Robin Hood) and Cate Blanchett (as Maid Marian), along with Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle as the Merry Men.

The movie recently began production in England.

Ridley Scott: No More Nottingham

So much for Nottingham.

Ridley Scott told MTV that the much-buzzed about movie that originally slated Russell Crowe for the roles of both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham has been simplified, and its new title will reflect that.

I think we are just going to call it Robin Hood," the director said. "We start in almost 2 months."

The Crowe

Scott added that Crowe will simply portray the famed archer that rises from an unlikely background.

"[Crowe as both Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham] was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, 'I don't really know what it does for it, but it's alright'," Scott said of the now-abandoned idea. "It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end."

Cate Blanchett Rumored for Nottingham

Might Cate Blanchett come aboard Nottingham in the role of Maid Marian?

Actor Mark Strong told Great Britain's The Daily Telegraph that the actress is rumored to star in director Ridley Scott's Robin Hood tale opposite Russell Crowe.

"I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part," said Strong, who is expected to portray Sir Guy of Gisbourne. "She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it," he is quoted as saying.

Nottingham is scheduled for a 2010 release.

Brian Glazer Clears Up Nottingham Confusion

As previously reported, Russell Crowe will somehow play both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham in the upcoming film, Nottingham.

How is that possible?!?

Producer Brian Grazer (pictured) explained it to MTV:

“The two role confusion is that what Robin Hood does is he sees Nottingham in battle very early in the movie and Nottingham dies. And Robin Hood takes over the identity of Nottingham. Thats how it plays out.” Grazer said, adding that the film is “an origin story” for the characters.

It's also a confusing story, evidently.

Dual Roles Ahead for Russell Crowe in Nottingham

During a news conference for their news movie, Body of Lies, Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott were asked about their next project together, a Robin Hood tale called Nottingham.

Crowe says it's too early to announce a release date for the movie.

"It's one of those things where we're taking our time with. You don't want to be doing Robin Hood unless you're going to be doing it really f*cking well. It's got to be the best one ever done otherwise you should do something else," he said.

Crowe did state that he won't be wearing tights (sorry, ladies), but he will be starring opposite Sienna Miller, presumably as Maid Marian.

The major news, though, would come later on when Scott told MTV's Movie Blog that Crowe would actually be playing two roles in Nottingham: the sheriff himself and Robin Hood.

"He's playing both!" the director said, adding that the role would "a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes."

Ridley Scott's Notthingham Delayed

Russell Crowe PicturePreviously set to start production this fall, Ridley Scott's much anticipated Nottingham has had its production date postponded indefinitely.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Notthingham has been delayed because of

  1. The uncertainy of the upcoming Screen Actors Guild (SAG) inevitable strike
  2. Weather
  3. The script is not ready

The upcoming epic starring Russel Crowe will tell the Robin Hood story from a different angle, that from the persctive of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The movie was previously set to release on November 6, 2009.  Please, don't hold your breath.
