Akira originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war "New Tokyo" in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers.

The film is tentatively scheduled for a release in the summer of 2009.

Trio of Actors to Replace Heath Legder in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell will fill in for Heath Ledger in his final role in the unfinished fantasy flick The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Law's rep confirmed their casting to BBC News, but said it was unclear how the role would be reconstructed.

Production on the Terry Gilliam-directed film was suspended after Ledger died of a prescription drug overdose last month.

According to the BBC, original footage of Ledger may remain while Law, Depp and Farrell will play different incarnations of his character, Tony. We'll provide updates on this situation as they come in.

New Stark Trek Movie Flies to 2009

Movie fans will have to wait a few extra months to be taken back to the final frontier.

Paramount Pictures has shifted the release date of its upcoming Star Trek movie from Christmas 2008 to May 8, 2009. The J.J. Abrams-directed film is still in production.

Variety reports that the film's release date shift "was part of a major reshuffling to the studio's release calendar, as well as DreamWorks' release calendar. Studio insiders said Star Trek has the potential to gross more in May than in December."

The publication points out that, as of right now, only two other films are slated for release in May 2009: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Shutter Island.

Fanning Sisters Replaced in My Sister's Keeper

Abigail Breslin will replace Elle Fanning - and Sofia Vassilieva is liklely to replace Dakota Fanning - the upcoming drama My Sister's Keeper.

Variety states Dakota Fanning balked at a request that she shave her head for the role; both sisters withdrew abruptly from the film.

Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Definitely, Maybe) will take over the role of a young girl who sues for emancipation from parents who conceived her as a genetic match so she could prolong the life of her ailing older sister. Vassilieva would play the older sister.

Cameron Diaz will portray the mother of the girls and Alec Baldwin the attorney who represents the child.

Director Speaks on Pirates of the Caribbean 4

pirates3photos51.jpg Will there be a Pirates of the Caribbean 4?

Geoffrey Rush more or less confirmed o MTV News back in September that he hoped any future films in the franchise would focus more on his character's relationship with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

However, if there's any plans for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Director Gore Verbinski is unaware of them.

"Show me the script," he said. "I look forward to reading the script for Pirates 4."

Verbinski knows, of course, that because of the ongoing writers strike, such a task would be impossible. But, then, past movies in the trilogy have already been green-lit, and even given a concrete release date, without a final screenplay.

Try it again, MTV reports, and you'll lose Verbinski, the director insisted.

"The process of having release dates and no script is not something I'm dying to go through again. I would have to pull the gun out of my mouth [first]," he said. "The reason I did 2 and 3, honestly, was because I still thought there was something to do there. I don't want to be involved in, you know, ‘Rocky 9.'"

Amanda Seyfried Joins Cast of Jennifer's Body

Amanda Seyfried - best known for her role in Mean Girls - will star opposite Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body, Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman's follow-up collaboration to Juno.

Filming begin in Vancouver in March.

More National Treasure Movies Planned

With talk of a Cloverfield sequel, Spider-Man 4 and even more Pirates of the Caribbean movies, we've now received word that Walt Disney Pictures wants to make a National Treasure 3. At least.

The studio is also reportedly looking to produce two more films in the Nicolas Cage franchise.

JimHillMedia.com reports that Disney has registered the domain names NationalTreasure3DVD.com and NationalTreasure4DVD.com, clear indications that the studio sees more box office gold to be mined from this Treasure trove.

So what might National Treasure 3 be about? That same website reports:

The story for the third National Treasure would "send the Gates family off to Easter Island and beyond in search of Atlantis. More importantly, the pure, clean power source that was supposedly lost forever when this ancient civilization sank beneath the sea. Which - were it to be harnessed today - would immediately put an end to global warming. Not to mention making gas and oil obsolete."

Would you wanna see a National Treasure 3... and 4?

Kieran Culkin is in negotiations to join the Heroes star in the film. He'll portray Panettiere's oblivious boyfriend.
