Mark Wahlberg Speaks on The Departed Sequel

The latest Mark Wahlberg movie is about to hit theaters - and Max Payne looks frickin awesome!

As part of his effort to promote the film, the actor spoke to ComingSoon.net about the possibility of a sequel to The Departed. Here are excerpts from the interview:

CS: What's going on with "Departed 2"?
Wahlberg: I don't know. They're still trying to make "Italian Job 2" so who knows. If it's worth doing and it's better than the first than it's worth entertaining. People loved the first one. If we can make it better than the first then we'll go on to do the prequel and go on to bring everybody back for that.

CS: What about a script for [for the sequel]?
Wahlberg: I don't know if they're working on it yet. I have no idea what's going on. I'm so focused on "Fighter" and that's not even happening so it's all depressing. I'm just looking for the next thing. I'm always looking for the next thing. I've done three or four movies since I've been training for "Fighter."

Mark Wahlberg Compares Movie Roles

At Comic-Con last week, Mark Wahlberg was asked if the role of Max Payne - for the movie Max Payne, based on the video game Mark Wahlberg - was a difficult character to get into.

He laughed off the notion.

“After doing The Lovely Bones, where you know also dealing with loss and a horrific act of violence, but then being able to do something about it was so nice. I remember The Happening had just came out and I walked into the editing room with it, the looping stage with John and he showed me some shit and I was just fuc---ing screaming with excitement.

I was so happy that my career was saved. My life, my credibility, my ability to walk down the street was in a hood again. I was just like yeah. I really was. I was fuc---ing screaming at the top of my lungs for like five fuc---ing minutes. But this is the kind of thing that I want to go and see.

I don't want to be told what I can and can't do, I want to try something different, I want to be able to play a lawyer, play a doctor but I feel most comfortable when I'm in a world like this.”

Mark Wahlberg Questions The Departed Sequel

Last year, Mark Wahlberg made it clear that he'd be interested in a sequel to The Departed, the eventual Best Picture winner.

"We may do another one, because it's based on a Hong Kong film [Infernal Affairs], and there is a trilogy. So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys," he said at the time.

More than a year later, Wahlberg was asked by MTV where the project stands.

"They're [still] developing it," Wahlberg said. "If it can be better than the first, then great. I'll be all for it. I'm not interested in going for the paycheck. I love Godfather 2 but, then again, I don't like Godfather 3."

Considering the demise of most main characters, and the high bar set by the first film, would you wanna see a sequel to The Departed?

Mark Wahlberg Hypes Max Payne

Mark Wahlberg doesn't count war (Three Kings), a skyscraper-sized wave (The Perfect Storm) or the Apocalypse (The Happening and Planet of the Apes) as his most daunting obstacle to date?

Instead, the actor points to a video game character.

"Two weeks out I was just dying," Wahlberg said to MTV of his title role in the upcoming video game adaptation, Max Payne. "I wanted my life back."

Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne? Safe to say we're excited about that.

More than anything, Wahlberg is excited about how complex the character is.

"Max Payne is not a one-trick pony. It's probably one of the edgier roles I've played but also the most layered," he said. "Here's a very happy guy who worked a dismal job, had a beautiful family. But the beauty in his life was taken away. He just goes on a rampage. It's all driven by emotion."
