Lethal Weapon 5: Not Totally Dead

Don't give up hope, Lethal Weapon fans!

While Richard Donner shot down rumors of Lethal Weapon 5 ever being made a couple weeks ago, producer Joel Silver won't put the nail in the coffin just yet.

"We talked about it, but it was something that [Mel Gibson] didn't want to do now." Silver told IGN. "It doesn't mean that he doesn't want to do it ever, but as of right now, he doesn't."

Riggs and Murtaugh

So the door is open, albeit very slightly, for a Riggs and Murtaugh reunion?

"If we can do it, it would be fun. Shane [Black] had a great take on it, a great idea, a great feeling about it. He did a really complex kind of treatment or outline, very complicated, very good... The idea that they wanted to get it up right away, we couldn't do that, but we'll see what happens."

Report: Mel Gibson Backs Out of Lethal Weapon 5

We weren't exactly huge fans of Lethal Weapon 5 being made, but it surprises us to learn that Mel Gibson wouldn't be all over this rumored movie as a chance to jump start his career.

It's quite the opposite, according to director Richard Donner. The man behind the first four Lethal Weapon films says a fifth won't be made because Gibson hasn't expressed interest in the project.

"Mel turned it down," Donner told The Los Angeles Times. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."

A Lethal Weapon

The director went on, referring to the possibility of Lethal Weapon 5:

"It's too bad, actually, because Channing Gibson, who wrote the fourth one, and Mike Riva, a designer on three of them, and myself and Derek [Hoffman, an associate at The Donner Company] had an incredibly strong story for the fifth movie. But we weren't given the opportunity and I think maybe I could have convinced Mel to do it. But Warners chose to go with Joel Silver.

"The project is pretty much dead in the water unless someone had the sense to come to me."

Columbus Short in Talks for Lethal Weapon 5

In an interview (below) for the upcoming horror movie Quarantine, Columbus Short sheds light on a far more anticipated film.

The actor confirmed rumors that he's up for a role in Lethal Weapon 5, also confirming rumors that the movie itself is likely to be made.

The Stomp the Yard actor said Lethal Weapon 5 is on the "fast track," revealing that he's in discussion to play Murtaugh's son in the film.

Lethal Weapon 5 Really is in the Works

According to Entertainment Weekly, Lethal Weapon 5 really is in the works.

Amazing, we know.

The magazine reports that Shane Black plans to direct the fifth installment of this Mel Gibson and Danny Glover vehicle; Black created the characters and wrote the original 1987 film.

Lethal Weapons

"Lethal number 5 still hinges on Mel Gibson, who's currently filming Edge of Darkness in Boston. Longtime Lethal producer Joel Silver has been trying to nail down approval from Gibson about Black's approach, which includes introducing a pair of young NYPD cops," the article states.

The story will supposedly revolve around the impending retirement of Martin Riggs (Gibson), who enlists his retired partner Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) to help him solve a final case.

Lethal Weapon 5 Script Written?!?

Hollywood might officially be out of new ideas.

Message board website TrackingB.com reports that Shane Black, who wrote the first Lethal Weapon, has penned a script for Lethal Weapon 5. The site adds that he contacted producer Joel Silver and said that he wanted to continue the story.

In this version of the cop franchise, Riggs (Mel Gibson) is about to retire, but pulls Murtaugh (Danny Glover) out of retirement to solve one final case.

TrackingB.com says that Gibson and Glover would be open to a return, but no deals have been signed.
