We've already praised the selection of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's upcoming live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland.
That opinion hasn't changed one bit now that we've seen an early version of Depp in this iconic role. Take a look for yourself:
Johnny Depp has announced plans to star in a trio of huge movies over the next couple years. Here's a rundown of each and our take on Depp's role in them:
YAY:
- Depp will play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s remake of Alice In Wonderland. Based on past collaborations between these two, seems like the ideal character anr project for Depp.
NAY:
- Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. Really? Apparently the critical lambasting of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was meaningless to the studio (seriously, that movie absolutely sucked!).
EH?
- Depp will also play the iconic idekick Tonto in an upcoming movie version of The Lone Ranger. We'll refrain from commenting until we learn what actor will take on the part of the iconic title character. But this seems like a random, outdated series to bring to the big screen.
Take this for what you will, but Johnny Depp certainly isn't shooting down rumors that he may portray The Riddler in a sequel to The Dark Knight.
During a recent radio interview promoting his band, the actor briefly commented on the recent talk floating around about him portraying this iconic character in the next Batman movie:
Host: Hey Johnny, a listener called in earlier said you have to ask about the rumors on the internet of you doing the Riddler.
Johnny Depp: Oh yeah, I heard about that. Not that I know of.
Host: You'd be a good choice.
Johnny Depp: It seems like it'd be a fun gig for a while, yeah.
Might Johnny Depp portray The Riddler? Should he?
Johnny Depp is at the center of two intriguing movie rumors these days.
First, he's supposedly being considered as the next Batman villain. Reports have connected him to The Riddler in the eventual follow-up to The Dark Knight.
Now, Entertainment Weekly is leaking word that Depp may portray the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's upcoming take on the fairy tale, Alice in Wonderland.
A 3-D movie of that classic slated for release in 2010. It will star Mia Wasikowska in the title role.
The source said the film will be live action until Alice jumps down the rabbit hole and meets the odd tea party host. The question is whether Depp himself will don a Hatter outfit, or lend his voice to the computer-generated version.
There's been no comment yet from Disney or Depp on the rumor. But allow us to say: sounds awesome!
