Robert Downey Jr. Speaks on Iron Man 2 "Character Arc"

At Comic-Con last week, Robert Downey Jr. gave fans a bit of insight into Iron Man 2.

For at least the second time, the actor talked about how the movie's action sequences are tied into its focus on character. He said:

Every piece of action that happens in Iron Man 2 is a direct result of a part of a character arc, including probably the biggest sequence in the first hour of the movie ... everything is a result of essentially dysfunction or mistakes made, and those mistakes, when you're Iron Man, and when you're surrounded by the kind of people he is, the ramifications are ginormous.

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010.

Iron Man 2: Trailer, Photos Revealed

A year before it opens in theaters, Iron Man 2 is already a hit.

At last week's Comic-Con festival, no show or movie received as much attention and hype as this wildly-anticipated sequel.

After discussion various inspirations and storylines for the movie, director Jon Favreau gave fans a look at the first trailer for the movie. It depicted two key scenes:

  1. A haggard and angry Tony Stark ate doughnuts with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The former described how tough it was to do all this world-saving on his own, yet refused Fury's proposal to join a "superhero boy band."
  2. Stark testified before a Senate committee about his possession of a secret super weapon. Sarcastically, Stark demanded the Senate thank him for maintaining "world peace." Garry Shandling, the Senate committee chairman, told Stark to "f--k off!"

Sounds awesome.

Meanwhile, the following trio of images from the film have been released:

Meanwhile, the newspaper talked with a number of people associated with Iron Man, as they gathered for the annual Comic-Con festival in San Diego.

"We were an underdog," Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige told the publication. "People didn't really know Iron Man, fans weren't sure Robert was right to play Tony Stark. We had doubters. Now there are a lot of eyes on us. They're expecting bigger things."

Gwyenth Paltrow, who plays the newly-promoted Pepper Potts in the sequel, was asked about any change in her character's relationship with her boss this time around.

"One day they have me getting together with Tony, one day they don't," she said. "It's kind of cloaked in secrecy, even from me."

Iron Man 2 Spoilers: Stan Lee as Larry King?

As most comic book fans know, it's almost impossible to make a movie based on a famous Marvel character and not include a Stan Lee cameo.

The iconic writer is credited with creating or co-creating numerous legends, such as Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man.

In Iron Man, Lee briefly appeared on screen and was mistaken for Hugh Hefner.

Stan Lee

Now, a source has written in to Collider and said he has the inside scoop on what role Lee will be portraying in the film's upcoming sequel. The insider writes:

Stan Lee filmed his cameo for Iron Man 2. I was told Stan filmed earlier this week and he was dressed as Larry King. The scene has Stan asking Tony Stark when he’s going to be on his show.

We can see that. Sounds like the, quick, undistracting cameo Lee typically makes.

Iron Man 2 comes out on May 7, 2010.

Iron Man 2 Spoilers, Rumors Galore!

There have been numerous rumors floating around the Internet regarding the Iron Man sequel. Below, we've summarized a series of possible spoilers for the movie:

  • Jon Favreau planned Iron Man as the first in a trilogy.
  • According to MTV Movie Blogs, Favreau believes the sequel will explore darker story elements, such as alcoholism, which he intentionally set aside from the first film.
  • Wikipedia quotes Robert Downey Jr. as saying: "The next one is about what do you do with the rest of your life once you've completely changed. I think the drinking and all that stuff would be a good way to confront his age, to confront his doubts, to confront the fact that maybe Pepper gets a boyfriend."
  • Terrence Howard has said his character would become War Machine in the sequel, just like in the comics: "Judging from how that audience responded, we got a pretty good shot of having some War Machine go down."
