In a new interview with MTV, director Guillermo Del Toro sounds committed to a third installment of the popular Hellboy fanchise.

Just not any time soon.

"We're three, four years away from anything happening - so I don't think anyone is, you know, in a big hurry," Del Toro said.

The main obstalce in the way of the next Hellboy feature?

The director is attached to a pair of Lord of the Rings prequel films from the Hobbit series of books.

Ron Perlman Pretty Much Confirms Hellboy 3

If we can be treated/suffer through a third film in The Mummy franchise, it's prety much a given that a third movie in the Hellboy franchise is on the way.

Now, star Ron Perlman has spoken more forcefully than ever on the possiiblity of a Hellboy 3. In a recent interview, he said:

"This ride we're on, opening number one at the box office, that's just icing on what was already the most delicious cake I'd ever bitten into," Perlman told Moviehole, commenting on the likelyhood of another installment.

"Nothing's been announced but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a third, particularly on the heels of Hellboy II's success. And I know Guillermo has an incredibly well-articulated idea about what the third movie needs to be. It'll answer a lot of questions. It almost needs to happen because with the ideas that he has about closing the trilogy, it would be a shame for it go unfinished."

Hellboy 3 Rumors Create Conflict

For the record, it's unclear if a third Hellboy movie will ever be made.

But if it is, director Guillermo del Toro has said, it "would be facing your destiny, if such a thing exists, and making the ultimate decision."

Sounds like a third movie would be the end of Hellboy, doesn't it? One important individual has a prolem with this, however: Hellboy creator, comic book writer Mike Mignola.

“The problem is, what del Toro’s talked about to me is that ‘Hellboy III’ would be the end of Hellboy,” Mignola said. “And here’s where we have the big conflict. My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to the ending. If [del Toro] makes ‘Hellboy III’ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet.’

Mignola added:

"My Hellboy is going to die, but I want to be the one who does that. And if del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get to the end of the comic."

For now, the issue is moot. But we'll let you know if and when a third Hellboy movie is planned.

Ron Perlman Speaks on Hellboy 3

The folks at IGN recently caught up with Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman.

They asked the veteran actor about the possibility of Hellboy 3, among other topics. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Q: How gratifying was it to see the success of Hellboy II in the opening weekend, after moving to a different studio and all of that?
Ron Perlman: Incredibly gratifying. That's rarefied air and when you get to be my age, you realize it's not only something that you never take for granted, but a tiny little fraction of those of us who throw in to this adventure ever get the chance to experience something like that. It's so overwhelming that I haven't even begun to take it in. Luckily, I'm doing Sons of Anarchy and I jumped right from the frying pan into the fire.

Yesterday we shot six scenes, so I didn't have time to think about much but learning my lines and delivering them. But yeah, I cannot tell you how vindicated we all feel; what a tough struggle it was for Guillermo to get the movie made with me and seven years of struggling. You know, we got a first one out and it was a modest success. We got a second one out and the stories are… you could fill volumes, just telling the stories about what it was like to get that movie made and here we are. The world has given us this cosmic hug and it feels really good.

Q: Does a third one seem in the offing? Is it something you guys have talked about?
Perlman: Well, I certainly think that it's not without the realm of possibility at this point. Yeah, I can only imagine the discussions that are taking place in some other dark room right now.

Would you go see Hellboy 3?
