Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has already opened to record-breaking numbers. Expect that trend to continue this weekend, as it's the only movie getting a nationwide release.

At midnight this morning, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opened in theaters across the nation.

And even though it may have been far past the bedtime of many fans, audiences came out in droves.

The sixth installment in this franchise earned an estimated $20 million for its midnight screenings, beating the $18.5 million midnight runs by The Dark Knight and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

In June, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed $16 million in midnight runs.

Translation: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is already a blockbuster.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince may have been bumped back seven months from its original December release, but we can say with confidence:

It's well worth the wait.

Combining great storytelling with top-notch special effects, this is the ideal set-up for the franchise's conclusion in the upcoming, two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Warner Bros. has chosen to create a long weekend for the film, bumping the long-awaited premiere date to Wednesday, July 15. Every hour helps after the studio postponed the opening by eight months.
