Neil Patrick Harris Dishes on Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Neil Patrick Harris recently sat down with ReelzChannel. The How I Met Your Mother star talked about how the original Harold and Kumar adventure changed his life.

"It radically changed my career, I think," he said. "I was actively seeking out smaller interesting plays and dramatic movies, and sort of leaning towards a Philip Seymour Hoffman-y kind of vibe for my career.

And the comedy was so forceful in [Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle] that I think it spun my trajectory into a more mainstream comedic way that I wasn't looking at, and I'm incredibly grateful for. I don't think How I Met Your Mother would have happened had the first movie not come out."

Harris added that comedy such as Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is a challenge, but it's one he welcomes.

"Comedy I find way more difficult than drama," he said. "Comedy is much more subjective. What I might find funny, the audience might not find funny. Or, even once removed, what I find funny the editor might not find funny. And they might choose the reaction shot from Take 4 with my line from Take 1 with my next line from Take 7, and then all of a sudden the timing that I was trying to do does not come across.

You have to be really conscientious of how you're playing it and give them good moments and trust that they will use them."

Reel Movie Reviews: Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

reel-reviews-logo48.jpg Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay comes out on April 25.

Considering the DVD success of Harold and Kumer's first adventure (something about trying to find a fast food joint), we can pretty much pencil in the follow-up at the top of next weekend's box office. Maybe even the movie of the year.

But what do critics make of it? We them for a movie review or two...

- A prison sex slave rebellion having to do with an organ sandwich, don't ask, and a detour over to Bush's secret sex den, make this ballsy doper duo and their Blue State versus Red State rant hard to resist. -- NewsBlaze

- In its own wacky way, Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay is one of the ballsiest comedies to come out of Hollywood in a long time. No kidding. -- Variety

In Guantanamo Bay

- The HIGHly-anticipated sequel to 2004's Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle comes just how you'd expect it: raunchy, wild, disgusting and completely absurd. -- Cinematical

- Like most comedy sequels, it is not as funny as its predecessor -- but, like most comedy sequels, that won't matter too much if you get stoned before you watch it. -- Eric D. Snider

John Cho Speaks on Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Star Trek

John Cho PictureAs Harold and Kumar prepare to escape from Guantanamo Bay later this month, star John Cho is already feeling the heat of the spotlight for his next role: he portrays Sulu in the upcoming Star Trek remake.

In a recent interview with TV Guide, Cho said: "I'm discovering how much of a basic building block of American citizenship it is. Everyone knows something about Star Trek."

With all the Trekkies clamoring for the next feature and analyzing every leaked spoiler regarding it, Cho's trying not to let the legacy of the role stress him out.

"You don't want to become paralyzed by that," he said, adding that Sulu "was a pioneer character," for Asian-American actors and that "was definitely part of why [getting the role] was so important to me. I wanted to participate in it. I wanted to be a part of that legacy."

Cho takes the chance to showcase himself as an Asian-American actor seriously. He said it was also central to his views on the role as Harold in the original film and now in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, as well.

"In doing Harold," Cho said, "the biggest burden is worrying about what Asians think.... It is something I always fret over when I take a role. I try to say no to things that I feel are not going to be good for Asians. Comedy is particularly tough.

You want to be able to make fun of race and you don't want to exclude yourself and your own race from the equation. So you want to make yourself vulnerable, but you don't want to cross a line, either."

Writers Discuss Sequel to Harold & Kumar

Harold & Kumar Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle has become a cult classic on DVD, along the lines of Old School and Anchorman.

So it was probably a no-brainer for writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to pen a follow-up, tentatively called Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, but also known for now simply as Harold & Kumar 2.

During the Austin Film Festival, Schlossberg said the sequel is "going to be just like Eurotrip, but it's not going to suck." He went on to explain that the original script for the sequel was a lot like Eurotrip... but then that movie came out, the plot had to be changed.

"I think we ended up with a much better story as a result," Schlossberg said. "We were thinking - if they go on a plane, what kind of stereotypes are they going to deal with there. It's very balls-out crass, offensive, shocking, gross - there's that type of comedy in the movie, but another layer with it that we hope connects the same way the first one did."

Hurwitz added: "The movie isn't overly political... but it's about taking these guys and examining another thing that's been going on in our society for the past few years. We put them in this mistaken identity situation, they're mistaken as terrorists, thrown into Guantanamo Bay.

The second act of this movie is that Harold and Kumar have escaped and they're on the run like The Fugitive. So it's exploring America in a different kind of way and hopefully provides the laughs the first one did."

John Cho Dishes on Harold & Kumar 2

It's a pretty good time to be John Cho right now.

The actor is playing the role of Sulu in the new Star Trek movie, but recently focused on another follow-up film with IGN.com: Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.

Cho said reuniting with Kal Penn for the film was "really easy. There's absolutely a period, initially, where you're kind of feeling everybody out and feeling how things will be.

I remember on the first one Kal and I went up to Toronto where we shot and we tried to hang out as much as possible, get to know each other, and try to develop something and become friends, essentially, in time for the movie, so that it felt a little bit more real.

John ChoAnd this time it was just slipping on an old, dirty pair of socks."

The actor didn't want to give too much away, but did say How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris would reprise his role from the original as, well, himself.

"Instead of giving anything away, let me assure everyone that Neil Patrick Harris is gonna blow your minds again. You thought he wasn't going to be able to do it. You thought you'd seen it.

You thought 'Ah, I know what that's about.' No. No. Neil Patrick Harris is gonna get into some business and it's gonna be dirty. But it's gonna be funny."
