Adam Shankman Speaks on Hairspray Sequel

Hairspray director Adam Shankman is excited to make a sequel to his 2007 musical hit.

While plot details are still being worked out, the filmmaker did tell MTV that evil Velma Von Tussle won't return for the follow-up.

“Yeah, probably [no Michelle Pfeiffer],” Shankman said. “Not because we didn’t love her, but because we just thought different adversaries [would be necessary].”

Is there anything else he can reveal about the Hairspray sequel?

“There’ll be a change in villains,” he said, likely subtracting Brittany Snow, who played Pfeiffer’s daughter in the original. “[John Waters’ script] has ideas that we’re just going to pick and choose from, and we’ll see what happens with it.”

Oscar-nominated composer/producer Marc Shaiman isn't just signed in for Hairspray 2... he's revealing key plot points for the movie!

“People hate Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) because she doesn’t lose weight," Shaiman told MTV. "They ask ‘Now that you’re famous, why won’t you lose weight?’. And Link (Efron) experiments with drugs. Throughout half the movie, he has an ongoing dialogue with three pimples on his forehead.”

The producer continued:

“Edna (John Travolta) loses weight, but sees her husband (Christopher Walken) lusting after fat women,” Shaiman laughed, citing one of the musical numbers he’s particularly eager to write. “And so, she finally breaks down and runs over to a snack table. Just within one number, she gets fat again; gaining 20 pounds at a time. [Her fat] pops out, and by the end of the song she’s completely at her old weight again.”

The likelihood of a Hairspray sequel just grew stronger than ever.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Adam Shankman talked about the follow-up to the original Zac Efron musical:

"We just got an outline and some ideas from John Waters, and now we're going out to writers," Shankman said, adding that the story will follow Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) and her friends as they navigate the "next era of music," the late '60s.

"That period was superpolitical, it was a time of serious change."

According to Shankman, Link (Efron) will become steeped in the British Invasion: "We're trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements."

Hairspray 2 will be released in July 2010.

Queen Latifah Confirms Plans for Hairspray Sequel

If Queen Latifah is to believed, her character of Motormouth Maybelle will be back for an eventual Hairspray sequel.

“I got an e-mail from people connected to the last movie,” the Oscar-nominated actress told MTV. “It said: ‘Keep your ears peeled.’”

As for the plot of a follow-up to Hairspray? The star isn't clear on that yet.

“I don’t know what he’s writing or what the concept is,” said Latifah, likely referring to director Adam Shankman. “But I’m glad they’re doing another Hairspray... It should be lots of fun."

Movie Rumor of the Day: A Hairspray Sequel

While High School Musical 3 will mark Zac Efron's last foray into that franchise, the actor is being recruited to star in a sequel to Hairspray.

According to Variety, New Line Cinema has made a deal with Hairspray writer John Waters to write a script for a follow-up to the 2007 movie.

Will you line up for a Hairspray sequel?

Look for director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to all return for the film. Also reported to come back ar Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman; they'll write new songs for the sequel.

"I never thought of musicals as franchises, but it certainly worked with High School Musical, and the idea of working with that cast again, and creating new material and music, is a dream come true," sais Shankman. "John (Waters) has such an original and extraordinary voice; we all can’t wait to see what he has come up with."
