Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Why I Starred in G.I. Joe Movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra as Cobra Commander.

In a new interview with Hit Flix, the actor talks about what drew him to the action movie.

"I'll tell you what it was. It was when they showed me drawings of the design for my character's look," the actor said. "I was like, 'I get to be that? You're going to make that in real life and stick it on me? Cool. Let me do it.' That's a once-in-lifetime opportunity. Actors throughout the ages would be flabbergasted at the abilities of modern storytelling and technology. I was honored and, beyond honored, I had a f***ing blast getting to play with these toys."

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra opens August 7.

Stephen Sommers Speaks on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Entertainment Weekly chatted with Stephen Sommers this week.

The G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra spoke on what inspired the movie. The inspiration's name? Bond. Jame Bond.

"I always loved the old Bonds. It's funny now how Bond wants to be Bourne. I loved Quantum of Solace, but it was like, man, this is a completely different movie to the Bonds I grew up with," Sommers said.

"In a very contemporary way, G.I. Joe is inspired by the memory of the kind of movies I saw when I was younger. I remember being in the theater for Thunderball and the big underwater battle at the end of that movie just blew my socks off. In G.I. Joe, there's an underwater battle under the polar icecap that's Thunderball times 10!"

G.I. Joe Producer Predicts Big Things

Here's the latest on next summer's G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.

Executive producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told MTV News that the film is looking great so far.

“We are in post-production, and it’s looking really good,” said Bonaventura, marveling over a few of the early scenes he’s been working on with director Stephen Sommers. “It’s going to be really fun, and it’s going to be big.”

The G.I. Joe producer added:

“There is going to be two or three really large sequences in it that are really going to blow people away. But I think that, more than anything, what differentiates it from a lot of these big movies is that there are eight or nine very well-drawn characters.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: G.I. Joe Movie is Different, Fun

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in 2009's G.I. Joe movie. The young actor is taking on the role of Cobra Commander.

He recently talked to MTV News about the iconic part and how writers have penned it for him.

“The cool thing about my character was that it’s not that digital,” said Gordon-Levitt, adding that he underwent significant changes to adapt to the role. “I get to put hours of prosthetic makeup on and see a different creature altogether. I’ve seen how he looks and it’s really cool.”

As for the movie itself, Gordon-Levitt said this version of G.I. Joe will carve out its own niche on the franchise.

“Everything is different,” he said. “I think it maintains the spirit of it and all the fun, but it brings the character into three dimensions. It wouldn’t look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. You wouldn’t want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictator’s uniform. It would look silly."

G.I. Joe Movie Update: Cobra Commander News, Changes

Joseph Gordon-Levitt set to take on the iconic role of Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.

But can we expect from this remade role?

Fans of the comic, who know the character as a bombastic terrorist that entombed his own son, will likely see a version with which they are familiar.

“As we see it, he’s a very twisted character,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told MTV News, adding that the key to Cobra Commander lies in his gritty past; and that we’ll see every dirty piece of it. “As the backstory evolves, you discover why his personality [is like that].”

Moreover, the producer said Gordon-Levitt will leave his own vocal stamp on Cobra Commander.

“He has an interesting voice. He definitely has a take-off on that. I actually found the voice a little weak in the show…I’m sure I’ll get killed for saying that. I don’t know, it always seemed kind of silly. Hopefully we’re going to be a little more menacing.”

Shhhh: Snake Eyes to Be Silent in G.I. Joe Movie

As fans of G.I. Joe are keenly aware of, Snake-Eyes is a black-clad warrior. The man is a silent, lethal assassin - with an emphasis on the silence.

But that almost wasn't the case in the upcoming movie based on the cartoon, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura admitted to MTV.

“We actually had Snake-Eyes utter one sentence at the very end of the movie,” di Bonaventura said “We thought [it] was very clever… [writer Larry Hama] didn’t think it was clever at all.”

Snake Eyes

Having penned all 155 issues of the original Marvel series, Hama was drafted by filmmakers to act as consultant to the project.

“The good news for us was we gave him the script and we held our breaths,” said di Bonaventura. “Because that was the moment where if he rejected the whole thing I’m not sure what we would have done. And what was great was he had really small notes, one or two very passionately held.

And what Larry said was no matter what you guys think, you can’t have Snake-Eyes utter a word.”

Actor Ray Park will be taking on the role of Snake-Eyes in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, which is set for an August 7, 2009 release.

The Baroness and Her Boobs

Sienna Miller, who plays The Baroness in the live-action G.I. Joe movie, may be natural beauty. But that wasn't enough for director Stephen Sommers.

He thought she needed a bot of help in the cleavage department in order to pull off the role of the curvy bad girl in the upcoming action flick.

Miller recently said that Sommers set her up with some breast enhancements to be worn underneath the sexy costume she sports in the film.

"(I wear a) tight black leather outfit. And much bigger boobs," Miller told The San Francisco Gate. "They gave me these things that looked like chicken filets. The director said, 'I'm gonna be honest, I like girls with big boobs,' and I don't have them so we made them bigger... At least he's honest. But I was mildly offended."

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, fake boobs and all, comes out on August 7, 2009.
