District 9 Director Finds FInancing for Follow-Up

Director Neill Blomkamp has found financing for his next film, says Variety. Sorry, it's not District 10.

Media Rights Capital has agreed to back the as of yet unnamed science fiction film. Bill Block with produce the film, and Blomkamp is already hard at work on the script.

“I’m not particularly interested in massive budget films, or creating huge spectacles that some young directors might be attracted to,” Blomkamp told Variety. “Hopefully, this will be a bit unique, very much a reflection of me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.”

The film, which is looking at a potential start date somewhere in mid-2010, will be made before any sequel to District 9.  That's okay, because D 9 star Sharlto Copley is also already hard at work with Joe Carnahan on The A-Team.

Neil Blompkamp Fuels Distrct 9 Sequel Rumors

When a studio wants a sequel to a hit movie, there will be a sequel to said movie.

With that in mind, as director Neil Blompkamp confirms, there's no doubt that a follow-up to District 9 will be made.

"I've got an inclination of an idea, but it's so not fleshed out yet," he said. "There's nothing official yet, other than the studio saying they want one - it's just the case of what the hell it is!

"It could go a lot of different ways, like what happens to Wikus? How do you wrap that character up? Does he become human again? I'd have to really think about how it goes."

Could the film be a prequel? Possibly, but it's unlikely, the director said.

"The only reason to do a prequel is because I find Wikus such a hilarious character... that I feel like I want to see more of him... if you take him at the beginning of this film, he's a more interesting character to me, so I'd like to see two hours of him being that character, but that's the only reason to go backwards."

Director Dishes on District 9 Secrets

Good news: we've added a few new District 9 quotes to our site. Check them out now!

Great news: Neil Blomkamp recently dished on a few secrets behind his new film. Here are excerpts from his interview:

On who voices the aliens: It's only one actor who plays every alien, it's Jason Cope. He plays every single alien.

Wikus, Grabbed!

On improvised dialogue between Wikus and the aliens: We would film the two of them and then we would go to a different shack. And he'd pretend to evict a new alien. Then we'd go somewhere else and somewhere else. So it was just the two of them. It's the conversations between those two, the actual dialogue and what actually came out of them was totally improved... That what makes it feel like they are really communicating.

On where the aliens reside: I think that they do have a home planet, it's pretty far away probably in the Andromeda Galaxy, but what I like is that they'll live on the ship for thousands of years. Obviously, there's much more of a population on the main planet, but the ships will go out and get the minerals and the ore and whatever resources they need and then bring them all back home.

Almost Definitely Coming Soon: A District 9 Sequel

If ever a film were ripe for a sequel, it's District 9.

The low budge film was made for just $30 million and has already grossed $37 million.

It concludes - spoiler alert! - with a number of questions:

  • Do Christopher and his son make it back to their home planet?
  • Does Wikus ever get "fixed" and become human again?
  • What happens to the aliens that were successfully transferred from District 9?

Above all, the movie has a director, Neil Blomkamp, who clearly up for another film.

''I would do anything to go back to the world of District 9 again,'' he told Entertainment Weekly last month. ''Or District 10.''

Magazine: District 9 Will Blow Your Mind

We aren't the only ones excited about Distrct 9.

Entertainment Weekly features the alien movie on the cover of its latest issue.

Inside, the publication reports that the film - which was screened to rave reviews at Comic-Con last month - was made for a mere $30 million. It's meant to be an allegory about apartheid.

Says the movie's producer Peter Jackson (yes, that Peter Jackson): “In an industry that’s looking to make movies out of every obscure TV show, District 9 is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”

Check out the trailer for it now. District 9 comes out on August 14.
