Cloverfield Sequel Update from J.J. Abrams

Will there be a Cloverfield sequel?

At least week's comic book event, WonderCon, director J.J. Abrams filled fans in on the status of the project.

"We're actually working on an idea right now. The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision. If you're going to do something, it should be because you're really inspired to do it. It doesn't really have to mean anything, doesn't mean it will work, but it means we did it because we cared, not because we thought we could get the bucks.

We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we're playing with, which means there will be something that's connected to 'Cloverfield,' but I hope it happens sooner than later because the idea is pretty sweet."

What is It?!?

Matt Reeves Answers Questions About a Cloverfield Sequel

We have an update on a rumored Cloverfield sequel.

Director Matt Reeves spoke to MTV News about the possibility.

“There are a couple ideas that have potential but we haven’t quite cracked it yet,” Reeves said, adding that locations have been discussed. “When we were in Japan we thought, wouldn’t it be cool to do it here."

Headless Statue of Liberty

As for plot discussions focusing on a follow-up to Cloverfield, the director said the story wouldn't necessarily take place “right after that night, but [it would have] intersections with the original.”

So, will Reeves commit to the sequel?

“I think if we find something that would be incredibly fun to make and that we would want to watch then that’s what would push it over the top. It’s a weird puzzle.”

Possible Cloverfield 2 Photo Creates Buzz

Might the Cloverfield 2 viral marketing campaign already be underway?

The following photo makes it seem that way.

As originally published and discussed by MovieWeb, this black and white picture appears to depict a bunch of baby Cloverfield monsters scurrying across the ocean floor - and didn't J.J. Abrams say that the original monster was a baby?

Cloverfield 2?

A Cloverfield sequel is planned for 2009.

Cloverfield Sequel Placed on Hold

At first, a Cloverfield sequel was considered a foregone conclusion.

But Director Matt Reeves told SCI FI Wire that plans for a follow-up film have been put on hold until the filmmakers can come up with an idea as interesting as the original.

"The thing that we sort of promised ourselves is we only wanted to do another one if we could come up with something that felt as fresh to us to make as that one did," Reeves said recently.

Reeves added:

"We're still kind of toying with what it's going to be and whether or not we're going to find something that will be as exciting for us to make and, hopefully, for an audience to watch. So we'll see. It's really in the baby, baby stages. And right now it's definitely on hold until we come up with what that would be."

This is almost refreshing to hear. We'd love for there to be a Cloverfield sequel, but we're glad the producers aren't willing to throw any crap on screen, know what we mean?

Anyway, with Cloverfield coming to DVD on April, here's a look at what viewers can expect on the disc. Yes, a pair of alternate endings are included...

Cloverfield Sequel to Be Named Aladygma?

Considering the original Cloverfield is still playing in many theaters, these is an extraordinarily early movie rumor.

But moviesonline.ca is claiming that the follow-up to this hit film may be called Aladygma. As the site reports:

Apparently, [Aladygma] is the code name for Cloverfield 2. It is, however, important to note that JJ Abrams has more then one untitled covert film in the works.

This is all we know about the film at the moment. Please send in any news you hear on the possibility of Cloverfield 2.

Matt Reeves Considered to Direct Cloverfield 2

reeves_matt.jpg Director Matt Reeves (pictured) might helm the rumored Cloverfield sequel, according to Variety, which is also reporting that Reeves will direct The Invisible Woman.

Timing of the projects will depend on how quickly Paramount can complete discussions with Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams and scribe Drew Goddard to scare up another monster tale for the Cloverfield sequel.

The Invisible Woman is a Hitchcock-style thriller that probes the mind of a former beauty queen who turns to a life of crime to protect her family. Reeves wrote the script and will produce with Abrams.

"Matt has created a truly original and compelling character and story," said GreeneStreet's John Penotti.

With a $25 million budget, a strong concept and cast of unknowns, Cloverfield scored a $46 million opening weekend, which was a record for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Cloverfield Action Figure on the Way!

We don't know what it looks like yet - guess that would be a Cloverfield spoiler if we did - but Hasbro has announced it will be releasing a Cloverfield monster figure that will be a "highly detailed representation of the beast."

"Hasbro is very excited to be working with Paramount and Bad Robot to bring to market a piece of the film for fans and collectors," said Brian Goldner, COO of Hasbro, Inc. "The fan buzz on this film has been terrific and we are happy to take part in the excitement."

The figure will stand 14 inches tall and will come with two interchangable heads - one depicting a calm face and the other an agitated face - and it even comes with the head of the Statue of Liberty, as well.
