Christopher Nolan Won't Commit to The Dark Knight Sequel

Following the critical and box office success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, it seems unlikely that director Christopher Nolan won't return for a third Batman movie.

But the man behind the camera is still hesitant to commit, recently telling The Los Angeles Times:

Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question:

How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either.

It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

Christopher Nolan Approached to Direct The Dark Knight Sequel

Despite the wild success of The Dark Knight, along with rumors of who might portray the next Batman villain, there hasn't been anything official yet about a Batman sequel actually coming together.

Until now.

According to Variety, "There's a deal for [director Christopher Nolan] to helm a third pic, but he has yet to decide on whether to tackle it yet."

Another Dark Knight Poster

Warner Bros. studio boss Alan Horn told the publication: "We have no idea where Chris is going with this. ... We haven't had any conversations with him about it."

Don't worry, Batman fans. We'd be shocked if Nolan doesn't sign a deal to direct the follow-up to The Dark Knight before the year is over.

Christopher Nolan Praises Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight

The Joker PictureChristopher Nolan recently commented on the performance of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

"The psychopathic clown, that's an icon to stand with the guy with the ears and cape. It's just a wonderful visual relationship, and it's a terrifying image. I think he'd be very pleased to see we're just moving ahead as is. If you try to honor somebody, you honor them by respecting their work and putting it out there for as many people to see.

He was immensely proud of the work he did on the film. I feel a great burden to present that in an undistorted form."

Added Producer Charles Roven about Ledger's own reaction to final product: "He was just blown away by his own performance. He said, 'Can I see it again?' So he was really, really thrilled."

Christopher Nolan: Harvey Dent is Backbone of The Dark Knight

headline2323.jpg We've heard a lot about The Joker, as portrayed by Heath Ledger, in The Dark Knight.

But Director Christopher Nolan claims that the movie actually belongs to District Attorney Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart, pictured).

In a conversation The Los Angeles Times, Nolan talked about Dent's role in the flick: "Harvey Dent is a tragic figure, and his story is the backbone of this film."

The smooth and politically ambitious Dent is destined to become the scarred supervillain Two-Face. Rumors state that Two-Face will be the main villain in the next Batman movie.

"The Joker, he sort of cuts through (The Dark Knight)," Nolan said. "He's got no story arc, he's just a force of nature tearing through. Heath has given an amazing performance in the role, it's really extraordinary."

Christopher Nolan Talks About Casting for The Dark Knight

IGN recently sat down with Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight. Here are a couple highlights from the interiew:

IGN: In all the many fan casting wish lists that made the rounds online, Ledger's name never came up. How and when did you think to cast him?
Nolan: To be honest, I don't exactly remember when it came to pass. I'd met with Heath several times on projects in the past and nothing had ever come of it. And I think he'd heard I was looking for someone to play the Joker before we had a script, and I'd heard that he was really actually into the idea.

Filming The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan shoot The Dark Knight.

And we met and we got each other. We both had exactly the same concept in our heads of who that guy would be in this film in the way that we'd interpreted it. It wasn't specific to, "Oh, he's going to look like this or talk like that" at all. It was about a psychological concept.

It was about a character concept. It was about the threat of anarchy. It was about anarchy being the most frightening thing there is. Chaos and anarchy in this day and age, and I think it is. It's certainly the thing I'm most afraid of.

IGN: Are you concerned at all about the Justice League of America movie and of a new Batman being introduced to audiences while your franchise is still going?
Nolan: Not really. To be perfectly honest, it's not really something I've thought about much. I really am just immersed in making this movie. Whatever will happen will happen, and we're just working very hard to make this movie the best it can be.
