Christian Bale: Excited to Reinvent Terminator Franchise

In theaters these days, prior to The Dark Knight, Christian Bale is featured in ads for Terminator Salvation.

The actor recently told MTV he was excited to be jump-starting another iconic franchise.

“I see there is great potential for reinvention and revitalization of the mythology of it,” Bale said. “And that’s what I’m aiming to do. That’s what I feel like our responsibility is; otherwise there is no point in making it.”

Bale added that the script is similar to Batman Begins; it brings a fresh perspective to a fatigued series, while keeping one foot firmly planted in the past.

“In Terminator we are continuing a mythology,” he said. “We don’t ignore a mythology, [similar to what] we did with Batman.”

Christian Bale is Twice the Icon

Christian Bale certainly doesn't shy away from iconic roles.

The intense actor is donning the cape of Batman for the second time in this summer's The Dark Knight. Here's a shot of him from the blockbuster:

But Bale isn't finishing stepping into the shoes (or, in the case above, finely crafted suit) of famous movie roles. He'll next take on the part of John Connor in Terminator Salvation. Here's a look at him from that 2009 film:

Christian Bale Disses, Dismisses Robin

Christian Bale is an obvious fan of the Caped Crusader.

But ask the actor about joining up with Batman's long-time running buddy on screen and don't expect a favorable response.

"If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I'll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work," Bale reportedly told the World Entertainment News Network.

Fortunately, Robin won't be cropping up in The Dark Knight - or any Batman installment that Christian Bale stars in.

Christian Bale Speaks on New Terminator Franchise

In a recent interview, Christian Bale refers to Heath Ledger - his costar in The Dark Knight - as a "kindred spirit," adding:

"He was a unique character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him."

A Bale of Hotness

From Bruce Wayne to John Connor, Christian Bale doesn't shy away from iconic roles.

Bale also spoke at length about his role as John Connor in the upcoming, rebooting of the Terminator franchise. The actor said:

"I've always had two varying degrees of success, and I'm not talking about anything to do with box office. I'm talking about my own parameters. You know, an interest in attempting in a wide variety of stories. I never desired to be a big studio movie actor, action actor.

I've never desired to be a serious independent movie actor. I enjoy all of those. It depends on what mood I'm in. And therefore, I will try to bend those stories into becoming something that I can enjoy myself, varying degrees of success with that. We have an opportunity with it for a continuation, but also a reinvention, and I have to say, much the same way in my mind as we have with Batman.

And beyond that I won't say anymore because we're just starting."

Christian Bale, Others Rumored to Join Nottingham

According to Great Britain's The Daily Mail, Christian Bale might be taking on another iconic role.

The actor - already portraying Batman and set to take on John Connor in the next Terminator franchise - is in talks to join Russell Crowe and Sienna Miller and play Robin Hood in director Ridley Scott's Nottingham.

The newspaper reported:

Christian Bale, soon to be seen as the caped crusader in The Dark Knight, is in talks about donning the jolly Lincoln Green outfit of Robin Hood, where he will be part of a menage a trois between Russell Crowe's Sheriff of Nottingham and Sienna Miller's Maid Marian.

Vanessa Redgrave, William Hurt and Saoirse Ronan are also in discussions to join the movie.

Crowe and Bale starred together in last year's 3:10 to Yuma. We'll have more on them possibly teaming up for this vehicle as information comes in.

Nottingham is aiming for a November 6, 2009 release.

Christian Bale Comments on Heath Ledger

In the June 2008 issue of Details, Christian Bale comments - and celebrates, really - the work Heath Ledger. These two actors, of course, star together in the upcoming Batman film, The Dark Knight.

"He was incredibly intense in his performance but incredibly mellow and laid-back," Bale said. "Certainly there was this great anarchistic streak to it, just getting dirtier than anybody's envisioned the Joker before...

Naturally, (the movie) was something I wanted to share with him and expected to do so. And I can't do anything else but hope that it will be an absolutely appropriate celebration of his work."

In the Details

It was also recently announced that Bale will play the role of John Connor in three sequels to the Terminator franchise. We look forward to them.

Christian Bale Locked into Latest Terminator Franchise

Christian Bale appears to be locked in to yet another franchise. At the Cannes Film Festival, it was announced that that Bale has signed on for all three of the new Terminator films, starting with Terminator 4, currently in production.

"Christian was our first choice and he's a big fan of The Terminator, so we're very lucky," said Victor Kubicek from Halcyon at the Cannes Film Festival. "But with Batman he's already done the whole franchise thing, so we weren't sure he'd respond."

"He read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three," added Kubicek's business partner, Derek Anderson.

Next month, of course, Bale stars in his current franchise, portraying Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight Spoilers: Christian Bale Dishes on Plot

Remember the end of Batman Begins? The fantastic movie ended with a warning from Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) to Batman (Christian Bale) about "escalation" in crime and villainy now that there's a man in a batsuit prowling Gotham City.

Well, in a recent interview with The New York Times, Bale confirmed that "this escalation has now meant that he feels more of a duty to continue," and that the idea of Batman flying around the city has actually attracted more criminals to Gotham.

There's where The Dark Knight picks up.

Another Posted for The Dark Knight

Bale added: "And now you have not just a young man in pain attempting to find some kind of an answer, you have somebody who actually has power, who is burdened by that power, and is having to recognize the difference between attaining that power and holding on to it."

Meanwhile, the newspaper confirms that Ledger had completed work on the film before he died in January, and that Nolan feels a "massive sense of responsibility" to do justice to Ledger's final lead performance.

The director calls Ledger's portrayal of the Joker "stunning" and "iconic," as well as "terrifying" and "amazing."

The Dark Knight opens on July 18.
