Reel Movie Reviews: Bruno

Following Sacha Baron Cohen's role in Borat, viewers know what to expect from Bruno.

But while a few jokes, and numerous depictions of male nudity, may seem stale, we challenge anyone not to laugh out loud at the entire second hour of this comedy.

Considering the hot button topic of gay marriage, the movie even takes on more social importance than Borat, but let's not fool ourselves: there's a lot of penis and a lot of laughs.

Be prepared. And read our Bruno review for more.

Bruno Spoilers: Scenes from the Movie

You've seen the trailer, you've read the Bruno movie quotes.

But we've actually seen a screening of this upcoming comedy and nothing can prepare viewers for the absurdity more than a look at a few scenes from it.

Stop reading now if you wish to watch Bruno, which opens on July 10, with a clean slate. But read on if you want an early look at a few ridiculous examples of the lengths to which Bruno goes on screen:

  • He conducts an interview with Texas Congressman Ron Paul. The supposed subject? Austrian economics. The end result? Bruno corners Paul, ripping off his pants and leading the Congressman to refer to Bruno as “queer” as he rushes out of the room.
  • Within the first 30 seconds of the movie, viewers witness a giant "taint" on screen. (You can look that up yourself if you don't know what it is.)
  • In the closing scene, Bruno mocks the charitable concern "Band Aid," as he invites singers Chris Martin, Sting, Bono, Elton John, Slash and Snoop Dog to take part in the taping of “Doves of Peace."
  • When Bruno visits the Middle East and asks a member of Al Qaeda why Osama bin Laden looks like a “Dirty Wizard” and a “homeless Santa Claus.”  The trip concludes with Bruno being chased down the street by blood-thirsty Hasidic Jews.

Bruno at Work

Bruno Movie Cuts its Michael Jackson Scene

Sacha Baron Cohen may have no tact and completely tasteless humor in his movies, but at least the studio in charge of the Burno's release has some class to it.

Michael Jackson's complete unexpected death last night has forced the studio to do a last minute edit of Bruno to remove the scene that pokes fun at the Jackson family.

During the scene in question, Bruno interviews LaToya Jackson in his LA aparment where he makes her sit on one of his "chairs" (Mexican workers kneeling on the ground).  After serving her sushi off the body of a hairy naked man, Bruno steals La Toya's phone to get MJ's number.

While the scene doesn't sound tasteless to MJ, its timing would certainly be poor.

Though the reason for king of pop's death is still unknown, many believe it's due to a Demerol overdose and his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Robert Murray, is being saught after for questioning.

The Bruno Movie Trailer

Be warned:

The following trailer for Bruno is definitely not safe for work.

In fact, because the comedy might be stuck with an NC-17 rating, you actually have to enter your birthdate to watch it. But it's very much worth your while.

Bruno is a hilariously gay Austraian reporter played by Sacha Baron Cohen, who brought us the 2006 classic Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

An NC-17 Rating for Bruno?

As Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen is unafraid of embarrassing sex acts.

The same can't be said for Motion Picture Association of America, however.

According to a report in The Los Angeles Times, Bruno "has been slapped with an NC-17 rating on its first submission to the Motion Picture Association of America because of numerous sexual scenes that the ratings board considers over the line."

Need an example? In one scene, the main character appears to have anal sex with the cameraman. We see nothing wrong with this, as long as the cameraman was cool with it.

Release Date Pushed Back for Bruno

Movie goers will have to wait a few extra months to laugh at Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming foray into the world of undercover homosexuality.

The release date for Bruno has been pushed from May 15 to July 10.

According to Variety, the comedy grabbed the July slot after it became available last week when Sony announced it was pushing back the release of Roland Emmerich's action flick 2012 to November 13.

Bruno Causes Hilarious Stir

Not surprisingly, Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno is creating havoc around the country.

The Associated Press reports that the gay character of Bruno caused a major ruckus in Arkansas last month at a pair of cage fighting matches. At a June 6 match in Texarkana dubbed "Blue Collar Brawlin'," a "wrestler" named "Straight Dave" challenged a planted audience member to a fight.

Of course, instead of a brawl, this led to a staged homoerotic scene where the two men, stripped to their underwear, grappled, groped and eventually kissed each other as the audience exploded into a bottle-throwing tizzy.

The convention center had to be cleared and the actors involved reportedly fled through a tunnel.

The untitled Bruno movie - whose full title is rumored to be Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt - is scheduled for a 2009 release.

Bruno Premiere Date Set

Bruno - Sacha Baron Cohen's followup to Borat - will hit theaters on May 15, 2009.

Although details have been kept secret, the new ficomedylm is expected to be similar to Borat; i.e. based on a character that the performer introduced to American audiences with his acclaimed HBO comedy series Da Ali G Show.

Forget Borat. Bruno is coming in May, 2009!

We assume the film will focus on Baron Cohen conducting interviews with people who are supposedly unaware that he's an actor in disguise, this time as a flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter. See?

It's hilarious already.

Sacha Baron Cohen is Bruno

Borat, who?

Sacha Baron Cohen is seen here in Los Angeles, dressed as flamboyant Austrian fashion journalist Brüno.

The actor continues to make a (comedic) scene while filming his latest movie, tentatively titled, well, Brüno.

Sacha Baron Cohen Films Bruno

Sacha Baron Cohen, best known as a certain Kazakh journalist named Borat, is currently filming his latest movie, Bruno. It's a mockumentary about a gay Austrian TV presenter.

The crew had permission from the Witchita airport to film a scene on March 18 based on a "European man" visiting America. However, problems arose when security workers were alerted abotu men dancing in tight short shorts, kissing and fighting in the lobby.

Later on, Cohen's film crew also reportedly stirred up chaos at a Kansas church by entering as an assumed European documentary crew, but then attempted to become part of a parish play.

Needless to say, we can't wait for Bruno.
