Ice Age 3 and Transformers 2: Tied at the Box Office

Here's a first in 2009: like last year's Minnesota Senatorial race, this weekend's box office match-up was too close to call.

A pair of sequels finished tied at the top, as evidenced in the rankings below:

  1. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: $42.5 million
  2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $42.5 million
  3. Public Enemies: $26.1 million
  4. The Proposal: $12.7 million
  5. The Hangover: $10.4 million

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: At $448 Million and Climbing!

This just in: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a major hit!

Through Tuesday, the sequel's worldwide box office haul hit $448.4 million. It will soon pass Angels & Demons as the highest-grossing movie on the planet for 2009.

Domestically, the film has grossed $228.4 million in its two-week run. By early next week, it will undoubtedly overtake Up ($255 million through Tuesday) as the biggest movie in the States, as well.

Unsurprisingly, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has crushed the competition.

It may have received terrible reviews, but $200 million later, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is officially a hit.

The sequel grossed $201.2 million over its first five days of release, barely falling behind The Dark Knight's $203.8 million haul as the second-biggest five-day opening in history.

As far as just this weekend went, the film earned $112 million, easily topping the box office. Here's a look at the top five:

  2. The Proposal: $18.4 million
  3. The Hangover: $17.2 million
  4. Up: $13 million

Audiences Say Yes to The Proposal

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynold's The Proposal opened this weekend and dominated the box office proving America's desire for a mediocre romantic comedy.

Meanwhile, the Jack Black / Michael Cera buddy comedy, Year One, opened to much less impressive results pulling in only fourth behind existing movies.

Now for the final top four.

  1. The Proposal - $34.1 million
  2. The Hangover - $26.9 million
  3. Up - $21.3 million
  4. Year One - $20.2 million

Audiences Still Hung Up on Hangover

Though Denzel Washington and John Travolta's The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 made its debut this past weekend, it could not keep up with repeat dominating weekends by Pixar's Up and the sleeper hit The Hangover.

Miley Cyrus proved it last week and Zac Efron drove the point home this weekend: it's a tween world. The rest of us are just living in it.

So much for original concepts or titles.
