Troy Duffy Calls 'Overnight' Filmmakers "Douchebags"

Love him or loathe him, Boondock Saints filmmaker Troy Duffy has managed to do the impossible- piss off just about everyone in Hollywood, get virtually blacklisted from the industry, and return to the fray years later with not just another film, but a sequel to the project that soiled his name in the first place.

Troy Duffy returns

Duffy recently sat down with Comingsoon.net to discuss the trials and tribulations of what may be the shortest 10-year career in Hollywood history, set the record straight about Overnight, the documentary that made him infamous, and talk about his latest creation, a sequel to the cult hit Boondock Saints.

Asked about the mess that the first Boondock Saints became, Duffy had this to say:

"I don't know if I would say it was on "life support." I think as soon as "Boondock" touched the public it lit the fire, and that fanbase started to assemble and grow and grow and grow every year since. What happened was it almost died because we were basically let down by the powers that be in Hollywood."

To the guys that made the documentary Overnight, which showcased the noveau-riche Boondock filmmaker as foul-mouthed, egotistical and out of control:

"I think I almost should say "thank you" to those guys sometimes. It's helped make me more controversial than I actually am, and controversy in this business is worth its weight in gold. Unfortunately it's not true. I worked very hard just to be able to do what I do, and sometimes that film does not necessarily help out, but the net that it's cast is like, "Troy's this crazy, John Huston, f*ckin' weird controversial guy," and sometimes that does work for me, you know? So thanks for that, douchebags."

And about working in Hollywood:

"Alright, if we had eight hours I could tell you everything I've learned, but basically what I've learned is that there's politics in this business that need to be played. People investing millions and millions of dollars into your film need to be made to feel comfortable, that you have your head screwed on straight and you're gonna deliver."

Maybe Troy Duffy isn't that bad of a guy. Maybe Overnight was a bit harsh. Or maybe he's just done a lot of growing up. Either way, despite his sordid past, there are fans that are rabidly awaiting the second coming of Boondock Saints. If they all pony up to see Boondock 2, Duffy's second chance may just pay off.

The McManus Brothers Discuss Boondock Saints 2!

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day will see Connor and Murphy McManus back on the big screen after a 10 year hiatus from the original film.  According to Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus, nothing much has changed about the brothers since we last saw them.

Reedus and Flanery recently sat down with Collider.com for an insightful interview about the forthcoming Boondock sequel:

It seems like they're both very passionate about the characters and the new film, and perhaps a little intoxicated too. But hey, if you're working with a guy like Troy Duffy, it's probably easy to become a drunkard. See how their view of the film stacks up against what Billy Connolly thinks.

Boondock Saints II hits theaters this Friday.

Billy Connolly Talks Boondock Saints 2

Legendary comedian Billy Connolly recently sat down with Comingsoon.net to talk about his career and his latest role, reprising Il Duce in Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.

Il Duce Picture

In the interview, Connolly expounds on what it was like to get back into character and settling back into working with the notoriously surly Troy Duffy.

Connolly had this to say about what it was like to get back in action for Boondock 2: "It was great. It was real easy because the same cast had all assembled again. If the characters had been different it might have been peculiar, but it was the same guys so it felt like an old, comfortable suit of clothes."

About how Troy Duffy got him back on board for a sequel: "I stayed in touch with him. I lost touch for a little while, and then a limo driver gave me his number. The rest of the guys had been in touch with him all the time, and I missed him, I missed his company. He's a great guy. So I bullied him into thinkin' about me again, but he had been thinkin' about me all the time anyways."

About Duffy himself: "I love the way he behaves, and I feel very very comfortable working for him. I think the fact that everybody came back to work for him says everything. Absolutely everybody, including Dafoe... I think he enjoys being who he is. He's very kinda Rock 'n' Roll, you know? That's the kinda background he comes from, a Rock 'n' Roll background. He behaves Rock n' Roll, and I'm very comfortable with that."

All of this would seem to contradict the portrayal of Duffy presented in the documentary Overnight as a foul-mouthed, unpleasant egotist, which was a chief reason it has taken 10 years to get a sequel to Boondock Saints off the ground.

Boondock Saints II receives a limited theatrical release October 30.

Boondock Saints Director is Still a Jerk

I'm probably going to piss some people off when I say that Boondock Saints is one of the most mediocre movies I've ever seen. So, it was with much surprise that I discovered that Boondock director Troy Duffy was actually allowed to make a sequel, cleverly titled Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day.

Well, he might have beaten the odds and gotten another movie made, but reports are that he himself hasn't changed all that much. A recent New York Times article examines the situation.

Troy Duffy1

“He hadn’t learned an awful lot,” said the comedian Billy Connolly, who plays the lethal character Il Duce in both films. “But he was much more sure of himself.”

Oh no! the last thing we need is for Duffy to be more sure of himself. Check out the documentary Overnight to see what I mean.

Here is a guy who literally had the keys to the kingdom handed to him, and instead of spread the wealth and be happy, he decided to screw over his family and alienate just about all the friends he had. He even managed to bite the hand that fed him by making an enemy of Harvey Wienstein, who bizarrely thought Duffy would be the next Tarantino. He had it all in the palm of his hand and ruined just about everything.

Todd Fossey, the producer of Overnight,  had this to say: “It’s hard for me to imagine, after Troy’s track record, that anyone would take him at his word unless there was some financial end in mind. I have to admit it is impressive that he got the sequel off the ground after making enemies of the likes of the William Morris Agency, Harvey Weinstein and nearly everyone else in the industry. It’s amazing what one can accomplish when they sell their soul.”

Duffy, however, views it all differently.

“I learned things about myself,” he said, “but it had nothing to do with that film. I’ve learned that politics need to be played in this business. I have learned that there will always be people who try to drag you down and the measure of a man is how he reacts to that. I’ve been gut-punched a million times and stood back up and kept moving forward, and now here I am coming out with the sequel.”

Yes, Troy, because you were such a victim. Asked if there was anything else he learned, Duffy said this: “I learned that if your friends ask you for permission to follow you around with a camera, the correct answer is no.”

Yep, that's the sound of big change... Boondock Saints II opens in a limited theatrical release on October 30, 2009.

Boondock Saints Sequel Spoilers, News

It’s been four months since Troy Duffy announced that a Boondock Saints sequel was in the works.

Recently, writer/director of this cult classic appeared on WJFK 106.7 and confirmed that the film is scheduled to go into production in August, barring a strike by actors.

Slash Film quoted Duffy, as he revealed the plot of the Boondock Saints follow-up:

“You kind of wonder what has happened to the brothers… They have been living way back in the valleys of Ireland with their father on a family run sheep farm, way beyond the reach of technology or men. Way out there. It’s been sort of a bucolic existence, hard working pioneer-esque type stuff.

Il Duce

Will you see Boondock Saints 2?

They have long hair and beards, and stuff like that. You get the sense that they’ve been hibernating to come back. And there is an event that transpires in Boston.

A priest murdered in a church and the body is rigged to make it look like the Saints did it. The one guy that the brothers and father have contact with is Il Duce’s brother.

So he gets the first notion of this, puts his jeep in gear and tells the brothers what happened. And without even thinking of it the boys are up and out of there … they cut their hair, digg up their rosaries, strap on their guns, and they’re gone!
