There's only one major studio movie opening this weekend. And we could easily debate just how "major" it is.....

Prediction: Nicolas Cage hasn't made a good movie in years, and we doubt a recycled plot about a killer with morals will do the job now.

Somehow, the 1995 movie Leaving Las Vegas produced an Academy Award win for Nicolas Cage and a nomination for Elizbaeth Shue. Neither star has come close to replicating that success in the 13 years since.
Now, each is starring in a new movie. Shue is actually receiving rave reviews for her part in Hamlet 2, but we can't say the same for Cage.
His one-note performance in Bangkok Dangerous isn't enough to overcome a tiresome story about a retiring assassin. We've seen it all before: the killer with a conscience, the chase sequences through the streets of a dimly-lit city, Cage's monotone.

The remake is coming out August 22 and stars Nicolas Cage and is still directed by the Pang Brothers.
Bangkok Dangerous is about a hitman named Joe who goes to Bangkok to execute four enemies of a crime boss. In the remake Joe picks up a pickpocket as his errand boy and is no long deaf-mute as he was in the original. Instead his girlfriend is. Works for us.
