Nicole Kidman Blasts Performance in Australia

Australia tanked at the box office this winter, earning under $50 million domestically.

Now, star Nicole Kidman is speaking out about her own poor performance in the drama.

"I can't look at this movie and be proud of what I've done," Kidman told Sydney radio station 2dayFM.

The actress was quick to praise her co-stars, however.

"But I thought Brandon Walters and Hugh Jackman were wonderful," she added. "It's just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all."

Australia Stars Come Out for Premiere

Earlier in the week, though, the two main stars of this epic posed on the red carpet for its world premiere. Here's a look at Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman at the event:

Australia is directed by Baz Luhrmann and is set in northern Australia prior to World War II. It focuses on an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a ranch and reluctantly unites with a stock-man (Jackman) in order to protect the property from a hostile takeover.

Baz Luhrmann has High Hopes for Australia

In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, director Baz Luhrmann talked in detail about his latest movie, Australia.

Based on at least one quote from the discussion, it's apparent this movie maker has high hopes for the Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman drama:

"Will the film succeed? I cannot guarantee that. But is there a hunger for a movie like this? Yes. I mean, I am inviting all of America to "Australia" for Thanksgiving, and we're gonna serve a cinematic banquet. And what I mean by that is that the film goes from comedy, to tragedy, to action, to drama — and yet, underneath it all is a big, emotional idea.

And if it in any way puts out there for an audience a sense of hope, and uplift, and the possibility of going on stronger in times of adversity, then we haven't wasted our time. Now I think the film has a chance of doing that."

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman: Steamy in Australia

Australia is a Baz Luhrmann-directed epic starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. It comes out on November 14.

In the drama, Kidman portrays English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley, who falls in love with a cattle driver, played by Jackman.

“It’s romantic, adventurous, and huge in scale,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly about the movie. ”That’s what I love about Baz. His movies really are all about breaking society’s rules and love conquering all. Working with Nicole was beyond anything I could have imagined.”
