Judd Apatow Hints at Plan for Anchorman Sequel

First, the good news: Judd Apatow says an Anchorman sequel is looking even more likely now than it was a year ago.

Now, the really good news: the writer/producer/director has offered an idea for the follow-up comedy, one we're fully behind.

In an interview with Empire, Apatow hinted that he and Will Ferrell may set the film in the present, making Ron Burgundy and company senior citizens.

“The great thing is, Will can be any age and play that character," Apatow said. "Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old. So we would always laugh that this movie could work if everybody’s really elderly.”

The New Team!

The concept makes sense: Remember, Anchormen ended with an epilogue that forecasted the immediate future of various characters (Brick went off to serve as a top advisor to George W. Bush, for example).

Therefore, a sequel would almost have to be based many years down the line. We can't wait!

Paul Rudd Offers Hints About Anchorman 2

Can you smell that?

It's the hint of possibility. Or maybe it's just Sex Panther cologne.

Either way, Paul Rudd is speaking out on the Anchorman sequel rumors that have been floating around Hollywood.

“Last I heard they were starting to write it and they were thinking about setting it in the eighties,” Rudd told MTV. “[But] I know when we were shooting it [director] Adam [McKay] said if they ever did something it would have to be really weird like we were on the moon or something. I think it has to go even further if it was to work.”

Like what? Rudd offers no suggestions. But he does sound giddy at the prospect of returning to play Brian Fantana should the long-talked about script actually materialize.

“I don’t know if it’s a throwaway comment Adam McKay had made at some premiere or something. I think [he’s]’s interested in the idea. I think Will [Ferrell] is too,” Rudd told MTV News. “Certainly it was so fun to make that if they were to do another one I think we’d all be really interested in it.”

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Fuel Anchorman 2 Rumors

Wrier Adam McKay has teamed up again with Will Ferrell for the upcoming comedy Step Brothers.

When these two sat down with ComingSoon.net to discuss that project, however, focus turned to the exciting possibility of a follow-up to an earlier film that focused on a certain, arrogant, clueless news man.

"We just had so much fun making that movie, and it was hard to get made, but what's been great is that it's taken on such a life of its own," Ferrell said about Anchorman, while hinting at the possibility of a sequel. "At least the feedback we get is it's beloved, so yeah, it's just one of those that feels like an evergreen thing that we can go back and do it again."

He Looks Good!!!

Ron Burgundy gets himself ready for an Anchorman sequel.

McKay also commented on the rumors of Anchorman 2.

"We had a lot of ideas," McKay said. "The opportunity to be that free and loose. The audience would give us a lot of rope with that character at this point, a lot of free rein. They all know it, and they all know it's going to get crazy, and that's just too tempting. It's like oh my God, where can we go? What's the next level of this idea we can push to?"

A suggestion of showing Ron in the 1980s has been flloated, McKay added.

"We got about seven ideas we're kicking around right now, so somewhere out of all of them, it will somehow fit together."

Steve Carell: Down with Anchorman 2

As rumors of Anchorman 2 persist, at least one actor from the hilarious original says he'd reprise his role in a San Diego minute.

"I've heard some inklings as to what Adam McKay has in mind for a sequel, and it's really funny," Steve Carel said. "But I couldn't say anything more than that."

How excited would you be to see Brick Tamland again in Anchorman 2?!?

The actor added that he "can't wait to find out" what Channel Four News weatherman Brick Tamland is up to these days, also saying that he loves his co-stars from that film almost as much as he loves lamp.

"Everybody's a friend," he said of David Koechner, Paul Rudd and others. "That is one of the most fun things I ever did. I laughed until I cried, every day on that movie."

Carell can next be seen in Get Smart, which opens on June 20.

Pretty Much Confirmed: Anchorman 2

Rumors of Anchorman 2 were teased by Judd Apatow a few months ago.

But now Adam McKay - the writer behind the original movie and the co-creator of Funnyordie.com - has pretty much confirmed plans he and Will Ferrell have for an Anchorman sequel.

"Will and I are like let's do Anchorman 2… we're going to do it, for sure," McKay said to Collider. "We're dying to do it. Unless we can't get the cast together, which is always kind of a tricky thing. But, I think, with that cast we're all friends, so yeah, we want to do it."

Anchorman 2!

Yay! Anchorman 2 is on the way!

Judd Apatow Teases Anchorman 2

It's hard to take Judd Apatow seriously when it comes to, well, anything.

But the mere mention of an Anchorman sequel has the Reel Movie News staff giddy, so we have to at least post Apatorw's recent comments to MTV.

"The movie that probably has a best shot at a sequel is Anchorman. Ron Burgundy would be hilarious at 70-years-old, being the anchor," the writer/director mused of what films on his resume might demand to be revisited.

Come on, you cant tell us the sight of an elderly Will Ferrell, still boisterous and conceited, warm milk dribbling down his now white beard, doesn't make you laugh out loud. Make it happen. Judd!

"Yeah," Apatow laughed, "We all think it would be fun to see him up on his feet again doing what only he can do. That would be awesome " but it could only happen in 30 years."
