2012 Decimates the Box Office

It's confirmed: audiences love to see stuff blow up, no matter what the season.

Roland Emmerich's disaster film 2012 blew away the box office with an estimated $65 million, making it the seventh largest opening for November, and the biggest moneymaker this year since July.

2012 toppled the Jim Carrey animated film A Christmas Carol to number two, which brought in $22.3 million, a drop of only 26% from the previous weekend. Coming in third with only $6.2 million, the George Clooney comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats.

The micro-budget juggernaut Paranormal Activity only raked in about $4.6 million this weekend, but that puts the film's total officially over the $100 million mark, an incredible feat for a film that cost only $15,000 to produce.

Here's a quick list of the top 5 this weekend:

  1. 2012 - $65 million
  2. A Christmas Carol - $22.3 million
  3. The Men Who Stare at Goats - $6.2 million
  4. Precious - $6 million
  5. Michael Jackson This is It - $5.1 million

Roland Emmerich Will be Skiing on the Day the World Ends

If you ever wondered how nuts a guy like Roland Emmerich would have to be to make some of cinema's most preposterous disaster films, look no further than this recent interview he did with comingsoon.net.

Roland Emmerich is nuts on set

"It is peculiar how 2012 is this date that there are a lot of ideas about it, and we chose the destructive one," the flamboyant director said. " I think destruction works better in the movie. The preparations, well, I will go ski. It is December 21st, which is skiing season. I will chose the highest mountain there is. If the world ends, you know, what can I do? If not, I will ski down."

And if that doesn't convince you he's crazy, check out his nonchalant attitude about wiping the White House off the map... again.

"Harold said, "If you don't destroy the White House, you will be asked about that." I said, "I cannot destroy the White House again." He said, "Well, just do it in a different way." At that time, I was reading a lot about the Kennedies. As a kid, maybe about twelve and a half, I visited these old war ships in the Chesapeake Bay and they had just inaugurated JFK there. I was really excited as a kid. It was about a wave, and then you know JFK comes back to the White House. I thought it was kind of clever. I told Harold, "Let's go for it!""

After claiming he was done with the disaster genre (yeah, right), Emmerich was asked what he might destroy next. His answer is beyond explanation.

"Actually, I destroyed the image of Shakespeare."

I rest my case.

2012 will destroy a theater near you this Friday.

After the quick little 2012 teaser trailer we were treated to last November, Sony Pictures has released the first full length movie trailer for his disaster movie.

The film is about the Mayaan prediction that the world will end in 2012 and they show several natural disaasters in the triler including earthquakes, eruptions, and tsunamis.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover and Thandie Newton.  Watch the official trailer below.

2012 Release Date Pushed Back

So much for 2012 being a summer blockbuster.

Sony's Columbia Pictures is delaying the release of Roland Emmerich's thriller, moving it from from July 10 to November 13, two weekends before the lucrative Thanksgiving session.

"We've had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said Tuesday. "We've got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that."

As for her character, Peet told the network:

“Basically, there are some people who know that there is going to be this sort of colossal global disaster and most people don’t,” she said of her character. “I’m on the sort of civilian side of the story where John Cusack and I try to escape with our family and find safety.”

The 2012 Movie Trailer

2012 is in the news a lot these days.

Not because of any possible Sarah Palin run for the Presidency. But because that's the title of the 2009 summer blockbuster, directed by Roland Emmerich.
