The Duchess Review

Review by Mr. Shrek

The Duchess is already receiving a great deal of Oscar buzz. But we don't see it.

After watching Keira Knightley in yet another period piece, our only thoughts were: been there, done that.

The movie is based on the true story of the Duchess of Devonshire and was based on a biography by Amanda T. Foreman. However, the woman at the heart of the story was crucial in British history; she played a significant role the women's suffrage movement, for example.

The Duchess Picture

As a film subject, though, The Duchess is reduced to a woman entangled in romantic relationships. You get the feeling that there were legitimate reasons to make this movie, but you can't figure out what they are based on the way Knightley's character is portrayed.

We're no history buffs, either, but research shows some serious truth stretching in the drama. The real-life duchess didn't see her kids for 14 years; but in the movie, she uses the main story line of a love triangle in order to get them back. It's really not worth getting into.

Overall, the costumes look nice and we all know Knightley can pull this sort of role off well. After all, she's done it about a dozen times.
