Soul Men Review

Review by Mr. Shrek

Sadly, Soul Men is getting attention for all the wrong reasons; it's the last film to feature Bernie Mac before the comedian's death this summer.

Moreover, Isaac Hayes, who also died in the last few months, appears briefly as himself in the comedy.

Also sadly, the closing-credit tribute that features Mac is more entertaining than the movie that precedes it.

For starters, the film is more lewd than one might expect. There's constant cursing, surprisingly explicit sex scenes and the obligatory Viagra jokes for any movie these days where the characters are over 50. The kids ought to stay at home.

But for those who remember the 1970's, the movie does a solid job bringing back that era of music. The stars also can't help but show their excitement over performing such soul songs, which adds life to an otherwise boring plot (a pair of former partners reunite for a tribute event in honor of their late manager). Mac and Jackson have a blast together.

It's just never far from one's mind that it's the last blast Bernie will ever have on camera.
