Balki Bartokamous says Tom Cruise was Homophobic

The Onion's AVclub.com recetly sat down with Bronson Pinchot, most recognizable as crazy foreigner Balki Bartokamous on Perfect Strangers and, more recently, as himself on The Surreal Life, for a rarther lengthy interview about the actor's career.

In one of the more interesting segments, Pinchot reveals his impressions of a young Tom Cruise on the set of Risky Business.

Tom and Bronson

Apparently, before Cruise was chanting "show me the money" or doing his own stunts, he was distractingly homophobic:

"We didn’t know it was going to be a big hit. We thought Tom [Cruise] was the biggest bore on the face of the Earth," said Pinchot. Pinchot and Cruise payed close friends in the 1983 comedy that launched both of their careers.

"He was tense and made constant, constant unrelated homophobic comments, like, 'You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there?' I mean, his lingo was larded with the most… There was no basis for it. It was like, 'It’s a nice day, I’m glad there are no gay people standing here.' Very, very strange."

"Years and years later when people started to torment him with that, I used to think 'God, that’s really fitting, because he tormented a lot of people as a 20-year-old.' He made such a big deal about it."

Asked if he thought that was because Cruise was insecure or just young, Pinchot replied, " I really don’t know. It is what it is; there’s nothing I can add to it. If someone’s 20 years old and every third line out of their mouth is anti-something specific, then draw your own conclusion. I thought it was very weird."

Crusie and Pinchot never worked together after that, and their careers clearly developed along different paths. Being the lesser known of the two actors, it's interesting to see Pinchot's perspective on the industry.

The full interview covers Pinchot's entire career, from working with Eddie Murphy on Beverly Hills Cop, through his height of fame in the Perfect Strangers days, up to his lesser known roles of today, including a short stint on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, and a quick story about how he made Mischa Barton cry. It's a fascinating, humorous peek into Hollywood, from a guy who just likes to tell it like it is. Check it out!

Guy Ritchie is Loco for Lobo

Hot on the heels of the tremendous success of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, Warner Brothers has been digging through the DC Comic archive looking for some new cash cows. This time, they pulled an odd choice- Lobo. Not ringing any bells? What if we said this was Guy Ritchie's next project?

Guy Ritchie Photo

Ritchie has been somewhat of a hot commodity these days, and we'll be seeing the fruit of his latest efforts with the Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law vehicle Sherlock Holmes later this year. After having suffered several previous years being married to Madonna and making a slew of lackluster films after his last hit, 2000's Snatch, Ritchie deserves a second chance.

So, it's only natural that WB, after working with Ritchie on Sherlock, feels comfortable handing the director a project about an alien bounty hunter that looks like a reject from Kiss, who comes to earth in search of four alien fugitives “bent on wreaking havoc”. Yeah, I don't know either. Luckily for WB, they've secured Ryan Reynolds for the Green Lantern project.

I can say this- I do remember seeing Lobo on comic book shelves in the 80s and 90s, and Ritchie's style could be a good match for the larger-than-life badass character, but reports are coming in that the studio is targeting a PG-13 rating. That's clearly to secure extra box office revenue, but I wonder if the kids in that age bracket will really jump for this film, let alone be satisfied with a toned-down version. However, if Nic Cage's Ghost Rider can do well these days, I don't see why Lobo shouldn't.

I guess we'll have to see how Sherlock Holmes does first. Holmes hits theaters this Christmas.

David Duchovny Desires More X-Files

Despite the lukewarm reception of the last one, David Duchovny is apparently itching to play Fox Mulder again in another X-Flles movie.

David Duchovny Picture

In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Duchovny let this out: “As far as the X-Files movie I’d like to do next, if we get a chance to do it, would be a return to the heart and soul of the mythology, which is the alien-oriented conspiracy. I think it’s natural for The X-Files to have another movie in 2012, so we’ll see if we get to do it.”

Unfortunately, it's not exactly up to him whether 20th Century Fox will want to pull the trigger on another Mulder and Scully big screen adventure. The last film in the series, 2008's X-Files: I Want to Believe was panned by critics and had only modest sales at box office despite the show's large and typically ravenous fanbase.

Duchovny shrugs all that off, saying,“I was happy with it… I have nothing but respect for [X-Files creator] Chris Carter and the writing staff."

There's not a lot of noise from creator Chris Carter, but X-Files writer/producer Frank Spotnitz has dropped clues that a third film in the series is possible, and that the significant date of December 2012 could play a vital role.

Angelina Jolie Considers Gucci Role

Ridley Scott is gearing up to shoot another true life epic along the lines of American Gangster, this time focusing on the sordid world of the... fashion industry?

That's right, Scott is planning to get started on Gucci, which will chronicle the wild and glamorous story of the Gucci family in the 1970s and '80s, when its 153 shops moved $500 million in product annually. And he's gunning to get Angelina Jolie to star in it.

Jolie is in talks to play Patrizia Reggiano, who was sentenced to 29 years in jail for plotting the murder of her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci. Gucci was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995, shortly before realizing his greatest success -- a daring fashion show debuting the clothes of newcomer Tom Ford.]

Having just signed on to do The Tourist, Miss Jolie has a quite a bit on her plate for next year.

20th Century Fox is planning a 2010 start for the film, and Scott has reportedly reached out to Leonardo DiCaprio to play Maurizio Gucci, but as of yet, he hasn't signed on.

The Crow to Fly Again Soon

Maybe it's the eerie resemblance Heath Ledger's Joker bears to the character, or simply studios grasping to cash in on any franchise, but Hollywood is planning to resurrect The Crow.

The Crow 1

The original film, directed by Alex Proyas and released in 1994, became an instant classic, thanks in part to the untimely and ironic death of lead actor Brandon Lee. A mix-up on set resulted in a prop gun being loaded with a real brass-capped bullet, instead of a standard blank, which fatally wounded Lee during a take.

Two sequels followed, but were relegated to home video. Now, only 15 years after the original hit theaters, it seems Hollywood executives have decided a reboot is in order.

Writer-director Stephen Norrington, best known for directing the Wesley Snipes vehicle Blade and the ill-fated League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, is working on a script for a new Crow film for Relativity Media. Apparently, "the project is moving forward and attention will now turn to casting the film."

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington told Variety last December.

Proyas, however, feels the remake is unnecessary. "I have nothing to do with the remake of The Crow," he said. "I wouldn't even dream of remaking the movie, because as far as I'm concerned that's Brandon Lee's movie and that's why I finished the movie -- in memory of Brandon. That's the only reason I finished it actually."

Project Greenlight Winners Talk About Their New Saw

Remember the last season of Project Greenlight? No? Well, the guys that won the writing portion of the contest are Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunston, for the film Feast. You may have seen their names attached to several other projects, such as The Collector and the last two Saw movies.

ShockTillYouDrop.com recently sat down with the writing duo to discuss their latest shriek show, Saw VI.

Saw VI theatrical poster

It seems that their first two attempts were merely beta tests for this third installment, so claims Patric Melton: "This is our third one out. With fourth and fifth film we were getting our footing on what the fans want. What makes a really good Saw movie, so I think with our third, we have a good grasp on that."

Asked about what kind of gore we're in for with the sixth installment, the writers didn't want to tell a lot. Marcus Dunston has this to say about the traps in Saw VI: "Well, I know we've been comparing to the others and we'll say they're the most vicious of the series"

"They're definitely bigger and involve more people," adds Melton.

"Once again, learning from previous entries, we're trying to refine the traps we've always loved. This one got under my skin, why don't we turn it up to 12?" replies Dunston.

"We regulate the escalation, too. So the film ends on the best trap," concludes Melton.
