Opening This Weekend: The Mummy 3 and Swing Vote

As usual, we'd like to end this week with a listen of movies coming out this weekend.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we're getting anything that spectacular, but if you've seen The Dark Knight a few too many times, here are your options:

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Stars: Brendan Fraser, Jeti Li
Quick synopsis: The third in the Mummy trilogy has Rick O'Connell up against Jet Li and and army of soldiers.
Prediction: Despite being panned by critics, this movie will still do well opening weekend.

Swing Vote
Stars: Kevin Costner, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper
Quick synopsis: One man's vote will decide the next election, watch him be wooed.
Prediction: Not going to fair too well.  Maybe we'll see it on DVD.

Reel Movie Reviews: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Reel ReviewsIn addition to Swing Vote opening this weekend, we also have The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor starring Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.  However, unlike Swing Vote which is getitng mixed reviews, it looks like there's a consensus on the third Mummy movie: it sucks.

Check out the sampling of reviews from around the web:

- The best news about this clangorous clunker is that it may well have vanquished the Mummy franchise. -- Wall Street Journal

- The new Mummy is, how can I put it? Just freakin' awful. -- Rolling Stone

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Photo

- Tiresome and messy, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor borrows mightily from the Indiana Jones franchise and various martial-arts films, but it doesn't do what those films did nearly as well. -- Washington Post

- You might not be able to kill a mummy but as "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" demonstrates, you can kill a franchise -- The Hollywood Reporter

Reel Movie Reviews: Swing Vote

ReviewsIf you've already seen The Dark Knight five times and are looking for something else to occupy your time, you might want to take a look at Swing Vote this weekend.

It looks like Swing Vote is getting mixed reviews from the critics mostly due to it being too lightweight on the political satire side.  At least it sounds like it's a cute movie to see the relationship between Kevin Costner and his on-screen daughter.  Here's a sampling of reviews from around the net.

- Swing Vote lopes along and is best taken as a tale of a father and a daughter coming through a rough patch to a better place, rather than anything to do with real-world politics. --  Chicago Tribune

- One minute you're laughing at its sendup of the political process, and the next you're stricken by the sorry state of the sweet and brainy protagonist's family. -- USA Today

- As often happens with politics, even as Swing Vote entertains, it leaves us feeling like we've been subjected to some slick manipulation and worse, left with promises unfulfilled. -- Toronto Star

- Swing Vote captures the spirit of an election year when many once-apathetic Americans are keenly interested in the outcome. We have met the enemy and he is us. But so is the hero. -- Minneapolis Star Tribune

Univeral Buys Rights to 2 Guns

Univeral Studios has bought the rights to 2 Guns, a graphic novel from Boom! Studios according to The Hollywood Reporter.

2 Guns the comic is written by Steven Grant with artwork by Mat Santoloco.  The story is about a DEA agent and an unvercover Naval Intelligence officer who are unwittingly investigating each other and try to steal money from the mob for the good guys.  Unfortunately, they are tricked by the mob into stealing $50 million from the CIA.  Sounds clever.

Marc Platt, the producer behind the hit Wanted, will produce alongside Boom! co-founders Andrew Cosby and Ross Richie.

Pierce Brosnan Talks Thomas Crown Affair 2

Hot off the publicity trail for Mamma Mia!, Pierce Brosnan discussed his next project, The Thomas Crown Affair 2, with USA Today.

Brosnan told them that although the new film is based off the 1964 film Topkapi, "We are just using a sliver of that."  Apparently the film will share the same setting, Istanbul.

This time around the billionaire thief won't be going after any paintings.  Crown will be going after a rare diamond.

Rene Russo will not return, but instead a new female lead will star alongside Brosnan.  Angelina Jolie is currently under consideration.  As Brosnan says, "This is a different affair."

This time around, the film will be directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers, Show Girls) who according to Brosnan "does sexy very well."  Which means Brosnan plans to "go to the gym to get rid of [his] Mamma Mia! middle."

Pierce, for 55, I'd say you look pretty damn good just the way you are.

Transformers Sequel to Include Shia LaBeouf's Injury

A blockbuster movie such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen can't just be shut down for a few weeks.

That's why director Michael Bay says star Shia LaBeouf's injury from his weekend car accident may be tied into the upcoming sequel.

“His two fingers are pretty mashed, but we’re figuring out a way to shoot around it, kind of write it in the story,” Bay told Access Hollywood of the actor, who has undergone extensive hand surgery.

LaBeouf was charged with a misdemeanor DUI on July 27.
