Reel Movie Stars: Jason Statham

Jason Statham PhotoSince his debut role in the 1998 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Jason Statham has quickly risen to being one of the biggest names in action movies.  Trust us when we say Statham is a Reel Movie Star.

Statham initially started off in the world of sports in both competitive diving and driving.  As a diver, Statham was an Olympic Diver on the British National Diving Team.  As a driver, Statham finished 12th in the World Championships in 1992.

Statham soon took his chiseled ahtletic body to the world of modeling.  It was when he was a model for the French Connection that he was discovered and auditioned for a role in Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.  From there, Statham has been on a non-stop career filled with some of the best action movies this decade and Statham's next movie, Death Race, doesn't look to disappoint.

To honor this bloke, we put up just a fraction of his movies with a ten movie filmography, six photos, and hundreds of quick one-liners.

Now what Reel Movie Star post would be complete without a series of fun facts:

  • Did nearly all his own stunts in The Transporter
  • Well trained in several martial arts, particularly kickboxing and Jujitsu
  • Jason and director Guy Ritchie became obsessed with chess during the shooting of Revolver
  • Dated English model and actress Kelly Brook until she met actor Billy Zane on the set of Survival Island
  • Also dated former singer Sophie Monk

Now we'll leave you with a photo montage of this hunky action star.

Reel Movie Stars: Rhona Mitra

Rhona Mitra doesn't want to be known as a video game character any longer.

The British actress rose to fame by portraying Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider video game. As Croft, Mitra attended trade shows and participated in media events, always in character. She was considered for the big screen version of Croft - but the part eventually went to Angelina Jolie.

Since then, Mitra has enjoyed more television show success than movie success.

She appeared for a few episodes at a time on Party of Five, Boston Legal and Nip/Tuck. You might also recognize Rhona from bit roles in The Life of David Gale and The Number 23.

In 2009, Mitra is set to take on her most prominent role yet. She has the lead role in Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans. It opens on January 23.

Might this part do for her what the starring role in the original Underworld did for Kate Beckinsale?

Our guess is, yes, this isn't the last you'll hear of Rhona Mitra.

Seth Rogen Puts Katherine Heigl in Her Place

A few months after Katherine Heigl appeared in Knocked Up - and had her movie career sky-rocket, as a result - the ungrateful actress told Vanity Fair that she thought the movie was “a little sexist.”

Heigl went on to say that Knocked Up "paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys. … It was hard for me to love the movie.”

Now, for the first time, someone involved with the hit comedy has spoken up about Heigl's unflattering remarks. While promoting Pineapple Express, Seth Rogen tried to temper his response to his former co-star's words. But it got harder and harder to do as the conversation went on.

"[I] thought it would have been nice if she'd said something while we were making the movie,'' Rogen said. "We don't hire actors as purely actors. We make them creative consultants basically and really get their opinions on every aspect. There's an extremely long rehearsal process solely dedicated to having those conversations so, yeah, I thought it was weird."

Alison Scott is Pregnant

Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen starred together in Knocked Up. Since then, the actress has gone on to diss the movie for no apparent reason.

Unable to refrain by getting a dig in at Heigl's main complaint - that Knocked Up somehw demeaned women - Rogen added:

"I mean, it won a Women's Image Network Award. Take that! She can take it up with them."

Happy Birthday, Edward Norton!

We'd like to wish a happy birthday to Edward Norton. The actor turns 39 today.

Norton most recently starred in The Incredible Hulk, a comic book movie that was overshadowed this summer by other successes in that genre, most notably Iron Man and The Dark Knight. The film was also marred by a conflict between Norton and the studio, as the star refused to publicize the flick before its release date.

Despite the disappointing experience and box office take of The Incredible Hulk, Norton is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Primal Fear and starred alongside Brad Pitt in the cult classic, Fight Club.

The Dark Knight Finally Feels the Thunder

It had to happen some weekend.

The Dark Knight was finally overtaken at the box office this weekend, as Ben Stiller's comedy Tropic Thunder made an estimated $26 million, dropping Batman and company to second place.

Here's a look at the top five from the weekend:

  1. Tropic Thunder: $26 million
  2. The Dark Knight: $16.7 million
  3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars: $15.5 million
  4. Mirrors: $11.1 million
  5. Pineapple Express: $10 million

The Burn After Reading Movie Poster

Here's a movie poster for Burn After Reading, one of the most anticipated films from the fall of 2008.

It's directed by the Coen Brothers and is their follow-up to the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men. The flick also stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney. In other words:

We'll see you at the theater on September 12, right?

Carla Gugino: Watchmen Rape Scene is Brutal

How many comic book movies are bold enough to show a rape scene?

None, so far. But that will change when Watchment comes out in the spring of 2009. The film will keep a violent scene of sexual assault from the comic intact, co-star Carla Gugino - who played Sally Jupiter in the film - told MTV News.

“It was really brutal. It was brutal to shoot,” Gugino said of the scene, in which The Comedian (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) attacks an young Sally, who only manages to avoid getting raped by the timely intervention of fellow mask Hooded Justice.

Sally Jupiter is confroned by The Comedian in Watchmen.

“That was one of the things [director] Zack [Snyder] said to me from the start: ‘I really want this to be incredibly brutal. It’s not a turn-on kind of story. It’s bad," Gugina said. "It’s important that we did that. I think hopefully it will be really powerful.”

As Watchmen prides itself on, this is certainly another example of it being anything but an ordinary comic book movie.

Questions Surround Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Release Date

As reported earlier this week, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - originally meant to be released in mid-November - is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2009.

Considering the new competition the film will now face, including the Transformers sequel, experts are confounded by the decision.

Warners Bros.' decision to change the release date was “a very curious move,” Jeff Bock of industry research firm Exhibitor Relations told MTV, especially considering how few family-friendly films will be released this fall.

Paying Attention

Bock predicted a total box office haul of over $300 million for Harry Potter if it had remained in the fall. Now? Those projections could drop because the July release date places Harry in competition with summer blockbusters such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

So, what movie benefits the most from the Harry Potter change of dates? That's easy: Twilight.

“There’s no way that Harry Potter was worried about Twilight, but Twilight has got to be feeling very good right now,” Bock said, projecting that the vampire movie could do somewhere around $70-100 million. “Maybe it won’t be as big as Harry Potter, but if a company like Summit Entertainment pulls off $100 million, that’s quite a coup. Things are looking really bright for Twilight right now.”
