Johnny 5: Still Alive

shortcircuit.jpg We weren't shocked to hear about X Files 2, or even the possibility of a fourth Jason Bourne movie.

But a sequel to the 1986 comedy, Short Circuit? Can't say we saw that one coming.

The original focused on Number 5, a robot built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon. It developed a conscience and a personality after being hit by lightning, and then needed the help of humans after it was targeted for destruction by its makers.

According to Variety, S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock have been hired to write the remake.

There's no word yet on whether any of the original film's cast - Steve Guttenberg, Ally Sheedy or Fisher Stevenson - will return for the follow-up.

Reel Movie Reviews: The Ruins

reel-reviews-logo42.jpg The Ruins was a best-selling book by author Scott Smith. The same man has now written the screen play for the horror movie, in theaters now.

Does the film live up to the novel? We asked that question to a handful of critics. Here are their answers...

- At once silly, gross and boring...aims to be something more than a generic vacationing-twentysomethings-in-peril movie, [but] its pretensions make it even more ludicrous. -- One Guy's Opinion

- The Ruins is one of the creepiest, most disturbing tales to hit theaters in months. If there is a film that is guaranteed to make your skin crawl, this one is it. -- Film School Rejects

A Look at the Ruins

- The shift from averting your eyes from the gore to rolling your eyes at the stupid dialogue is enough to give you a headache. -- Salt Lake Tribune

- ...like "Touristas" with a better cast, higher production values and a supernatural edge...hits all the novel's outer horror touch points, but director Carter Smith doesn't let them build so much as check them off a list that he's rushing through. -- Reeling Reviews

Reel Movie Reviews: Nim's Island

reel-reviews-logo41.jpg A comedic adventure starring Jodie Foster? Yes, that sums up Nim's Island.

Should you go see this departure for Foster? It also stars Gerard Butler ad Abigail Breslin. Here's how a few movie critics have graded the film...

- The worst movie of Jodie Foster's adult career, Nim's Island is as big a mess as you might expect from a movie with four credited writers (which means there were probably more) and two directors, all at apparent cross-purposes. -- Jam! Movies

- Nim's Island is a pleasant-enough jaunt for a family outing, but it never fully arrives at that 'perfect, secret world.' -- Houston Chronicle

Nim's Island Pic

- Its characters, especially the youngest one, are engaging, and few adults are immune to childhood fantasies about secluded tropical isles. -- The Hollywood Reporter

- Audiences may find early scenes of father-daughter family life more engaging than the adventures that ensue, but this is a fairly successful attempt at a preteen-friendly entertainment. -- Christian Science Monitor
