Reel Movie Reviews: Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

reel-reviews-logo48.jpg Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay comes out on April 25.

Considering the DVD success of Harold and Kumer's first adventure (something about trying to find a fast food joint), we can pretty much pencil in the follow-up at the top of next weekend's box office. Maybe even the movie of the year.

But what do critics make of it? We them for a movie review or two...

- A prison sex slave rebellion having to do with an organ sandwich, don't ask, and a detour over to Bush's secret sex den, make this ballsy doper duo and their Blue State versus Red State rant hard to resist. -- NewsBlaze

- In its own wacky way, Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay is one of the ballsiest comedies to come out of Hollywood in a long time. No kidding. -- Variety

In Guantanamo Bay

- The HIGHly-anticipated sequel to 2004's Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle comes just how you'd expect it: raunchy, wild, disgusting and completely absurd. -- Cinematical

- Like most comedy sequels, it is not as funny as its predecessor -- but, like most comedy sequels, that won't matter too much if you get stoned before you watch it. -- Eric D. Snider

Milo Ventimiglia Talks About Pathology

Pathology is about a group of medical students who create a scheme to see who can commit the perfect crime, one that even a fellow pathologist couldn't unravel. Get the title now?

The film stars Heroes hunk Milo Ventimiglia, who recently spoke to Movie Web about the project:

So what was it about this script that made you want to do Pathology?
Milo Ventimiglia: I liked the character. I liked Ted Gray. I don't know, I saw a nice, rounded arc and to try and find those beats as an actor, you're definitely doing unlikable things but you're the guy that has to keep everybody interested, you know? He's kind of a bit of an antihero. It's a challenge to make him likable doing all these terrible, terrible things.

Ted Gray Picture

From what I understand there's no real human quality about any of the characters by the end of this film?

Milo Ventimiglia: The one thing I really did like about my character in particular and how he fit into the whole film, is how you've got to show these two sides. You've got this world, these pathologists that are, day in and day out, taking apart bodies, coming up with theories about how they died and how to better serve the community.

At the same time these people have lives outside and families and my character in particular, he has a fiance and things are going well for him, so you've got to show that nice warm compassionate side at the same time you've got to show the steely, icy cool of a doctor. Not only that, but a doctor who gets a bit of a God complex and starts killing people for sport.

Happy Birthday, Maria Bello!

We'd like to wish Maria Bello a very happy 41st birthday today.

A gorgeous, underrated actress Bello has appeared in a number of films. The fact that she is quite open to getting naked on screen has only raised the appeal of this actress, who pretty much got her start on ER in the role of Dr. Anna Del Amico.

Here is her recent movie resume:

The actress joins Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson, Costas Mandylor and Julie Benz in the fifth installment of this horror franchise, which will be directed by the series' former production designer David Hackl.

Saw V is filming now and is schedule to hit the big screen on October 24, 2008.

Brett Ratner to Direct Eddie Murphy in The Incredible Shrinking Man

Brett Ratner is in negotiations to direct a remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man. Brian Grazer is producing the project, which has Eddie Murphy attached to star, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An updated version of the best-selling novel and 1957 sci-fi classic starring Grant Williams, The Incredible Shrinking Man will be taking the comedic approach to the fantastical material. It's set to tell the story of a famous Las Vegas magician (named Scott Carey) who is put under a spell that causes him to shrink.

He must find a way to reverse the spell before he gets so small that he disappears. We'll ignore the obvious joke here that many movie goers probably wouldn't mind of Murphy - the man who dared to make Norbit - himself disappeared from the big screen.

Reel Movie Stars: Luke Wilson

Luke Wilson Picture Following up Will Ferrell as our Reel Movie Star is no easy task.  We decided we'd let fellow Old School star, Luke Wilson go ahead and give it a try.

Most people know Luke as the younger brother and frequent co-star of Owen Wison, but Luke has certainly had an impressive career on his own.  Some fun facts from Luke's career:

  • Has been in over thirty movies in the twelve years since Bottle Rocket
  • Made his directorial, writing, and producer debut with The Wendell Baker Story
  • Played Ashton Kutcher's brother, Casey Kelso, in that 70's show and appeared in six episodes
  • Appeared in Wes Anderson's first three movies: Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums
  • Had a cameo in Scream 2 in the scary movie within the movie
  • Is considered a member of the Frat Pack alongside Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Steve Carrell

Now go ahead and check out Luke Wilson's bio for his complete filmography or check out some funny Luke Wilson quotes.  As usual, we'll leave you with a photo montage of this handsome actor.

Alexis Bledel Wonders About Sin City 2

Alexis Bledel hasn't heard anything about Sin City 2. And the young actress hopes that doesn't mean she'll be left out of any potential sequenl

In regard to her character's status from the original film, Bledel told MTV:

"It's questionable, because in the last scene [you saw me], technically I'm supposed to die. There's an assassin in the elevator with me and you assume I'm dead... But they've said that maybe I'm not dead. So, I don't know what happens in that elevator… Maybe I killed the assassin. That'd be awesome!"

No matter what her status is in the Sin City franchise, Bledel is certainly a go for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. It comes out on August 8.

Reel Movie Reviews: 88 Minutes

reel-reviews-logo47.jpg We never thought we'd say this about an Al Pacino movie, but of all the films opening this weekend, 88 Minutes looks the most boring.

The supposed thriller looks like a cliched cat-and-mouse cop flick, with Pacino in the role of the hunted police officer, haunted by his past. Do critics around the nation agree with us? Let's find out...

- 88 Minutes plays like a script Tom Cruise rejected back in the '90s, forcing Pacino to run -- across campus, across town, through parking garages, up and down stairs. -- New York Press

- 88 Minutes will add a little more luster to a career that has not been adequately appreciated perhaps because of the suspiciously seductive power of a little man with an outsize talent. -- New York Observer

- How Al Pacino found himself roped into this wacky movie is another mystery entirely and one that doesn't take much research past the words "yacht payment" to solve. -- Brian Orndorf

- If one is the loneliest number, two is company, three is a crowd and four is an orgy, then eighty-eight must be the universal symbol for unwatchability. -- Arizona Daily Star

Sex and the City Movie Spoiler: A Character Dies?!?

Miranda HobbesTake this Sex and the City movie spoiler with a grain of salt the size of Perez Hilton's ego.

But that celebrity gossip blogger has quoted Cynthia Nixon as saying a character will die in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the HBO series.

Tuesday night, at the Creation Nation comedy show at the Zipper Theater, Nixon reportedly told host Billy Eichner, "a character dies in the movie," but refused to give any details.

We think this means one of two things:

  1. The story is not true;
  2. A minor character perishes. No way one of the big four, or any of their significant others, kicks the proverbial bucket.

We'll all know for sure on May 30 when Sex and the City: The Movie comes out in theaters.
