Jim Carrey Loves You, Phillip Morris

Amazingly enough, this isn't a sequel to The Birdcage.

It's actually Jim Carrey and Rodrigo Santoro shooting scenes for I Love You Phillip Morris.

The movie is based on a novel about a married father who gets sentenced to three years in prison. He ends up falling in love with his cellmate, played by Ewan McGregor. When his cellmate gets released, Jim's character escapes from prison three times in order to be with him.

Naturally.

Why you should rent it
: Because Heigl's character in Grey's Anatomy has become so irritating, you'd pay to see her portray anyone else.

Mel Gibson Enters Edge of Darkness

No, the headline above does not refer to the place Mel Gibson has been on since his arrest for drink driving and subsequent rants against Jewish people. But that would be an understandable mistake to make.

Instead, the controversial actor will star in Edge of Darkness, his first leading feature role since 2002. The project is a movie adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries about a straitlaced police investigator (Gibson) who investigates his daughter's murder and uncovers systemic corruption that led to her death.

The film will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), who also directed the miniseries. William Monahan wrote the script, and Graham King is producing through GK Films. Monahan and King previously worked together for The Departed.

Matthew Fox Revs Up for Speed Racer

Matthew Fox recently spoke with Movies Online about his role in Speed Racer. The Lost star will portray Racer X.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:

What attracted you to this project?
Matthew Fox: The Wachowski brothers. That was the first way into the project was meeting them and hearing their thoughts on what they wanted to try to accomplish in the movie, and one of the first things that they said was that they wanted to make a movie that their nieces and nephews could see, and they had never really done anything like that.

They wanted to make a family movie and that really hit a chord with me. I have kids and I haven't done anything that I would feel comfortable for them to really watch. And then, you know, I went and did some research on the original source material, and I had definitely seen those images. I recognized them.

They were familiar to me but I don't think I'd ever really seen an episode, so I went out and got a bunch of those and watched a bunch of episodes and got a feel for what made that series in the 1960's so catchy, and then the script.

Larry and Andy wrote a script that I thought was just absolutely amazing, just all those elements. It was really the only project that I wanted to be in. I was looking at a few things last spring, but the minute I met with Larry and Andy and started going down the Racer X route, and Speed Racer, I didn't want to do anything else. And I pretty much said, "If I don't get this role, I'm not going to work this hiatus."

Hugh Jackman Opens Up About X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Hugh Jackman recently spoke to The Herald Sun about X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The actor is deep into shooting this X-Men spinoff, working Down Under alongside costars Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds.

"I'm used to these movies now," he said to the newspaper. "They're big and there's a lot involved, a lot at stake, so it's always high pressure. But Gavin Hood, our director, is a real force. He's an Oscar-winning director (for Tsotsi) and he's used to working under different kinds of pressure and stresses."

Meanwhile, Jackman hand-picked Melbourne youngster Kodi Smit-McPhee to play Wolverine as a young man.

"He's one of those kids who's fearless," Jackman said. "I hope he doesn't read this article because yes, there is pressure on him because of who he's playing and the expectations of fans. I was lucky to be completely ignorant of fans' expectations and the whole world before X-Men came out. I just hope he doesn't read too much or go on the internet because he naturally has the goods I know the fans will love."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters on May 1, 2009.

Reel Movie Reviews: Iron Man

The first blockbuster of the summer comes out this Friday.

Indeed, Robert Downey Jr. flies into theaters as Iron Man this week. While the previews for the film couldn't make it look much more exciting, we were curious what critics thought. Here's our answer...

- Audiences looking for grand escapist fare at cinemas this summer won't mind having spent their price of admission on it. Be sure to get some popcorn too... -- Sci Fi Movie Page

- In place is a talented cast, an interesting director, an established lead character, and a wealth of plots from the comics ready to be mined for future storylines. Despite Iron Man's problems, it will definitely leave you wanting more... -- IGN UK

- [An] expansively entertaining special effects extravaganza... -- Variety

- Handsome and Charismatic, Robert Downey Jr. renders a dominant performance, treating the comicstrip character as a dramatic actor, which compensates for the movie's flaws and elevates it above the standard of a slickly produced popcorn summer fare... -- Emanuel Levy
