Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis are Expendable!

Before he dons the headband again for another Rambo, Sylvester Stallone needs to finish up his most recent explosive romp.  This past Saturday, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis joined Stallone to shoot a scene in the upcoming adventure extravaganza The Expendables.

The Expendables teaser poster

Ethelmae's Blog describes the, um, action:

After Arnold, Bruce and Sly went through the scene a couple of times they all 3 headed off to wardrobe and make-up. at 8:10am with three cameras rolling the biggest action icons of our time went to work. I thought it was electric in Brazil when all of The Expendables stepped on set – but today was atomic!!!! the whole crew was mesmerized as we watched the three of them play off of each other in a pivotal scene that sets up the whole movie. And while I can’t/don’t want to give too much away I can tell you that Arnold’s character is Trench and Bruce is Church, the scene was shot in an empty church without extras and minimal set dec and it has tension and humor – what more can a girl ask for! Sly was in top form as a director today and was in total command. Bruce and Arnold were consummate professionals at all times – we got through the scene quickly without compromise. In 6 hours we did wide shots, close-ups, turned around…the whole nine yards…pretty impressive. Very Clint Eastwood.

Written and directed by Stallone, the film also stars Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Charisma Carpenter, Giselle Itie, Brittany Murphy, David Zayas and Amin Joseph. The action-adventure follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator.

Lionsgate has set The Expendables to blast into theaters on August 20, 2010.

Johnny Five Alive Again

Dimension films has signed Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr to remake the classic 1980's sci-fi comedy Short Circuit.

Johnny Five!

Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano will bring the story of a military robot gone awry when a bolt of lightning endows him with consciousness and personality into the 21st century. Instead of shacking up with Ally Sheedy, this reboot will see Johnny Five befriending a lonely young boy and his fractured family.

With any luck, this time the producers will stray away from having a white man portray an Indian scientist in the most stereotypical of ways. At least Milano is a fan of the original work, having parodied many classic 80's television and movie moments on Robot Chicken. If he and Carr can do to Short Circuit what Joe Carnahan is doing to the A-Team, we might be in for a treat!

Billy Connolly Talks Boondock Saints 2

Legendary comedian Billy Connolly recently sat down with Comingsoon.net to talk about his career and his latest role, reprising Il Duce in Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.

Il Duce Picture

In the interview, Connolly expounds on what it was like to get back into character and settling back into working with the notoriously surly Troy Duffy.

Connolly had this to say about what it was like to get back in action for Boondock 2: "It was great. It was real easy because the same cast had all assembled again. If the characters had been different it might have been peculiar, but it was the same guys so it felt like an old, comfortable suit of clothes."

About how Troy Duffy got him back on board for a sequel: "I stayed in touch with him. I lost touch for a little while, and then a limo driver gave me his number. The rest of the guys had been in touch with him all the time, and I missed him, I missed his company. He's a great guy. So I bullied him into thinkin' about me again, but he had been thinkin' about me all the time anyways."

About Duffy himself: "I love the way he behaves, and I feel very very comfortable working for him. I think the fact that everybody came back to work for him says everything. Absolutely everybody, including Dafoe... I think he enjoys being who he is. He's very kinda Rock 'n' Roll, you know? That's the kinda background he comes from, a Rock 'n' Roll background. He behaves Rock n' Roll, and I'm very comfortable with that."

All of this would seem to contradict the portrayal of Duffy presented in the documentary Overnight as a foul-mouthed, unpleasant egotist, which was a chief reason it has taken 10 years to get a sequel to Boondock Saints off the ground.

For more about Connolly's experience on set, what it was like working with Peter Fonda, and what lies in store for the actor/comedian, check out the full interview at comingsoon.net!

Boondock Saints II receives a limited theatrical release October 30.

Paranormal Activity Scares Away Jigsaw

The producers over at Twisted Pictures must be sweating. With a fraction of the budget and a much smaller theater presence and fan base, Paramount Pictures' micro-budget indie hit Paranormal Activity has dethroned the Saw franchise as the king of the Halloween movie season.

Paranormal Activity night vision

Spreading to about 2,500 screens this weekend, Oren Peli's supernatural thriller outperformed Saw VI, which opened in over 4,000 screens. Paranormal Activity earned $22 million, bringing it's 31-day total up to about $62.5 million, as compared to the Saw sequel's meager $14.8 million.

Have audiences finally had enough of Jigsaw? It's too early to tell, but the extremely lackluster performance of Saw VI's opening weekend could spell doom for the franchise, even though there are two more sequels in the works, in 3-D no less.

It just goes to show that you don't need a lot of money to make a film that audiences respond to. Paranormal Activity was shot for the paltry sum of $11,000, while Saw VI cost an estimated $11 million.

Mad Max Gets a New Ride!

I know what you're thinking- where does the Mad Max franchise go after Thunderdome and Mel Gibson's DUI?

We don't know either, but we're excited to hear that Aussie director George Miller is finally going to give us another taste of his post-apocalyptic vision. After 10 years of rumors, speculation and false starts, Max is finally going to get back behind the wheel!

George Miller recently spoke to the press about the new film, not just to say he's working on it, but to show off some of the new machinery that will be employed in the movie. Check out the new rides in this video:

It looks like the world still ended in the late 70's, judging by the style of the cars in the video. It's good to see that they haven't tried to update the iconic Interceptor, but have decided to keep the car pretty much as it was in the first two films.

What we don't know based on this is whether or not the fllm will be a true sequel, or whether Miller is planning a full-on reboot. Either way, it's exciting. No word yet on who will be starring in Mad Max 4, but rumors have been circulating the net that Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron are in consideration.

Miller states in the video that it will take a year just for the cars to be built, which means we might not know for a while who will be stepping into Max's shoes.

Mad Max 4 currently is on target for a 2011 release date.

Sherlock Holmes Uncovers a New Poster!

Warner Brothers has revealed the latest poster for its upcoming reinvention of the literary detective Sherlock Holmes. Click on the image to see a higher resolution version!

Sherlock Holmes Holiday Poster

The poster prominently features Robert Downey Jr. and Jude law as Holmes and Watson, respectively, looking rather dapper and a tad bit smug. Of course, Guy Ritchie is directing this retooling of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle characters, so they have a right to be a little full of themselves. Or maybe that's just because they're British.

Either way, they look much more dashing and daring on this poster than they do in a recent movie still. I hope that's just because they were trying to be incognito before.

Word around the campfire is that these characters will be a new breed of stodgy British detective, combining exemplary analytical skills with the ability to... kick ass? That's right, ye olde Scotland Yard apparently requires a black-belt in Guy Ritchie's version.

Sherlock Holmes is set to roundhouse a loafer to your face this Christmas Day!

Avatar, which has been in the making for over 10 years, will be Cameron's first feature film since 1997's Titanic.

Avatar is set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora, which orbits a gas giant, and is inhabited by the tribal Na'vi, ten foot blue humanoids that are peaceful unless attacked. Humans cannot breathe Pandoran air, so they genetically engineer human/Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars that can be controlled via a mental link. A paralyzed Marine named Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to exist as an Avatar on Pandora, falling in love with a Na'vi princess and becoming caught up in the conflict between her people and the human military that is consuming their world.

The film has been shot with a new 3-D camera system that Cameron has developed, and will be shown in Imax 3-D, where available.

Avatar hits theaters on December 18.
