Francis Lawrence, the director of I Am Legend, who was on hand last week at an NBC event at the Television Critics Association press tour.
IGN tracked him down and asked about the rumor of an I Am Legend prequel.
"We're waiting on a script. Will [Smith] and Akiva [Goldsman] and I sat down and talked about it and sort of came up with the bones of an idea," Lawrence said. "We hired a writer to work on it and we're just trying to figure it out."
As for what the prequel might be centered around, the director said:
"I don't want to [give away the plot] yet, just because I think part of the process and what's important to us is to really try and find the right way to getting back into that world. I think we were all really drawn in by the idea of what it would be like to be by yourself in this world, and I think [the challenge] is trying to find a new way of getting in there again, without it feeling like a repeat, a rehash, or it feeling forced, and feeling like there's a new story to tell within that world. So that's what we're trying to figure out."
