New Batman Villain Rumors Circulate

As The Dark Knight continues to shatter box office records, and Heath Ledger continues to garner Oscar buzz, rumors are already circulating about what big-name actors will take on the villainous roles in next Batman movie.

According to Great Britain's The Daily Telegraph, two new A-list stars are being talked about for a pair of iconic roles.

The paper, quoting "unnamed sources," reports that Warner Bros. has targeted Johnny Depp to play The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman to take on the role of The Penguin.

"Producers are convinced that the role of The Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction and still make the character his own," the souce said. "And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?"

Depp, Hoffman

Are we looking at the next Batman baddies?

As film fans know, Jim Carey was the last actor to portray the Riddler (in Batman Forever), while Danny De Vito played the portly penguin in Batman Returns.

It's not hard to imagine Depp or Hoffman in these roles. But do you think the Batman franchise is in danger of its villains overshadowing its hero?

thats just not right i am so mad about this sure Jhonny Depp is a good acter and all but the only person who could ever make a good riddler is Jim Carry and the fact that the best person to play the riddler isnt going to play the part makes me want to well not see the movie!!!!!!!!!

I am a huge fan of the Batman Movies, I have everyone thats came out including the older ones. I think that Johnny Depp will do a good job, true Jim Carry was funny and did do a good job but you cant say the movie isn't good until you watch and you can't say someone won't do a good job until you see them try.

Look, fact of the matter is is that Johnny Depp will very much outdo Jim Carey as The Riddler. Philip Seymour Hoffman..we'll have to see.

  4. Joe Says:

no argument that jim carrey did a great job as riddler BUT that was in a Tim Burton Batman movie. the chris nolan take on batman does not call for a funny corky riddler as played by carrey, it will call for a true twisted demented narcisist that the riddler was meant to be. Johnny Depp is absolutely %100 perfect for the role. And after the job Ledger did with Joker, Depp would be the only actor on the planet that could possibly one up that of ledger. Ledger won an Oscar for the Joker... Carrey's portrayal of the Riddler would never be taken serious enough to win an Oscar

daniel day lewis as the riddler, best option no doubt

The reason I choose Daniel Day to play the riddler was due to the fact that Chris Nolan has stated in several interviews over the past few years that his goal when he started directing this franchise was to basically show the public a darker version of the cape crusader, hence the title "The Dark Knight". How this ties into Daniel Day is simple, here you have a man who isn't in the public eye as much lets say as a Johnny Depp, also has a dark look and feel to him, and is a method actor just like Heath Ledger was, RIP. I truly believe if they were to choose DDL he would deliver a performance of Oscar quality and would rival that of Heath Ledger's.

okay, here's my opinion: i think the riddler role could go either way with either dainel day lewis or johnny depp. depp is the kind of guy you'd expect to take a different spin from jim carrey's showing or good ol' mr. nigma. his ego, his constant need for the notoriety without becomig cartoony. he would have the skill to fuse a willy wonka & a sweeny todd & make it his own. however if you wanna talk about dark & brooding with a hint of blissful insanity, mr. lewis is more than perfect for the role. jim carrey should NOT even be considered.
