Jim Carrey Will Pine for Ewan McGregor in I Love You Phillip Morris

Jim Carrey has found the man with whom he’ll soon fall in love: Ewan McGregor.

McGregor has signed on as Carrey’s romantic lead- seriously! - in I Love You Phillip Morris. The film is described as a “dark comedy” that is based on a true story (and a book by Steve McVicker), that traces the plight of Texas convict Steven Russell, a married father who fell in love with his cellmate.

Here’s how Variety explains the premise:

[Russell's] love for Morris motivated his escape from prisons four times, once by using a green pen and bucket of water to change his prison outfit into what appeared to be surgical scrubs, another time by faking his death from AIDS and signing his own death certificate. Morris eventually got out, but Russell’s escapades got him a 144-year sentence.

Carrey and McGregor will start working on the movie this spring.

Valkyrie Release Date Pushed Back

It’s not going straight to DVD, like the Jessica Simpson bomb Blonde Ambition, but the following news doesn’t bode too well for Tom Cruise’s next movie:

Valkyrie has been pushed from a release date of July 4 to October 2, 2008. There’s no way to spin this. A delay is never good news for a movie.

Juno: Beloved by Critics

No movie has been as critically acclaimed in 2007 as Juno.

Here are a few examples of what the reviews are saying about this Michael Cera and Ellen Page vehicle:

- [Juno] comes off as calculatedly irreverent at times… but its sweetness is genuine and next-to-impossible to resist.A.V. Club

- The sophomore film from Jason Reitman is as smart and funny as his debut feature Thank You for Smoking, and even more affectionate and full of life. — The Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Johnny Depp, Tim Burton Talk About Sweeney Todd

Here are a couple highlights of an interview Johnny Depp and Tim Burton recently gave to Movie Web:

Why did you want to do this picture, Johnny?
I mean I was familiar to some degree with the earlier versions of this, this stuff that you know I’d seen the, the video of um Angela Lansbury quite extensively.

And, and I’d seen the more recent production of it and then just thought it might be, you know certainly a great opportunity to, to try to find a, a new Sweeney, a different Sweeney in kind of a way I suppose like a … just like a little contemporary in the sense of like also the punk rock Sweeney you know.

Sweeney Todd Picture

How would you describe the process?
I think I was probably more frightened than anyone, except maybe Tim. No he really trusted me with it you know and, and like you know I, I was very lucky that he allowed me to … ’cause I didn’t have a process really you know in terms of the singing. I’ve never sang before in my life so er so, so I had to kinda find my way to it.

I thought it was important that I, you know, keep it very, very low key and, and so yeah I initially did these demos in my friend’s garage studio and, cause I didn’t know if I would be able to hit a note or. I just, I wanted to make sure I could do it for Tim.

So then, we did, I think the first demo we cut was with my friend, and like you know I showed it to er I showed it to Tim. You know he waited for the outcome really.

Jenna Fischer: Walking Hard, Singing Badly

In Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Jenna Fischer portrays Darlene Madison, the woman behind John C. Reilly’s main character.

While she may act well and look pretty, the actress reveals that she certainly doesn’t carry a tune in the film.

“No one would buy anything that I sing on,” Fischer said. “That’s why they hired someone else to do my vocals. I think I have a perfectly fine voice for karaoke - but Darlene has to be a recording artist.”

She continued:

“That’s definitely the closest I’ll ever come to being a stage musical performer. And it was a thrill - even if the audience was paid to show interest in what I was doing.”
So, what’st he trick to lip-synching, Jenna?

“You actually sing! I trained to inhale and exhale when the real singer did. But I was up there singing my heart out. I just hope they burn the audio tapes.”

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story comes out on December 21.

Knocked Up co-star Jay Baruchel is in the running to play the villain in the hugely-hyped live-action Justice League of America movie.

Jay Baruchel

Can you picture Baruchel in that role?

Bond 22 News: Movie Name, Bond Girl Rumors

In a recent interview, Daniel Craig hinted at the real name of the upcoming James Bond movie. (You didn’t think it would actually be called Bond 22, did you?)

The actor said that because Casino Royale dealt with Bond attaining his 00 status, the new film would chronicle his first actual mission as 007. Therefore, Craig hinted that the title for the film could quite simply be 007. Works for us.

Meanwhile, the latest name thrown around as being cast as the next Bond Girl is Gemma Arterton.

Gemma Arterton

Several British newspapers - The Sun, The Guardian and The Daily Mail - report that the unknown British actress has been cast in the coveted role. However, the papers attribute the news to MarieClaire.com, but a search of the site turned up no such report.

Others rumored to be up for the part have included Cleo Pires and Mayrin Villanueva.
