Gerard Butler Speaks on Nim’s Island

In Nim’s Island, Gerard Butler plays scientist dad Jack. Abigail Breslin is his plucky daughter Nim and Jodie Foster plays a reclusive San Francisco author.

Here are some snippets of Gerard’s interview with USA Today:

On his character researching plankton while keeping pesky pelicans at bay: One time, I was sitting, talking to a pelican, and he goes behind me and flaps his wings. I looked like an angel on camera. I was sure he was going to nip me or rip my ear off.

Nim

On his secondary role as the imaginary literary alter ego of Foster’s character: “When Nim reads a book about Alex Rover, suddenly I’m in an Arabian desert with evil captors, or I’m being tied up by African tribesmen.

On spending time with the young Oscar nominee: Nim and her dad are best buddies. I don’t think I could have done it as well with someone who didn’t have Abigail’s special talents. I learned a lot from her, how she would embrace an idea and go for it.

On going nearly bankrupt after Breslin embraced the idea of a “swear pot”: Me being from Scotland, I have a bit of a foul mouth. She fined me $2 each time. If I gave her extra, she would forget and not count it. It was hard to argue with her.

A Sneak Peak at 27 Dresses

Katherine Heigl might be stuck in an unbearable story line on Grey’s Anatomy, but her next movie looks promising.

It’s called 27 Dresses and it’s based around a woman who’s constantly a bridesmaid, but, alas, never a bride. Here’s a look at three of those dresses on Heigl:

One Dress

With the white bow strapped across Heigl’s backside, costume designer Cat Thomas tried to “make a really beautiful couture gown sort of be ridiculous at the same time.”

Another Dress

Heigl accessorizes a short strapless gown with a spiked choker for a friend’s goth nuptials.

A Third Dress

Heigl wore a traditional kimono with sandals and special toe-socks at a Japanese wedding.

Susan Sarandon Brings the Funny to The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones is far from a comedy. But Susan Sarandon will be doing whatever she can to make sure the drama has a bit of levity in it.

“I play kind of the comic relief,” Sarandon said of her role as Grandma Lynn in the upcoming production. “She’s [a] drinking, hard shooting, smoking [old lady] cutting across all of the pain, pain, pain. Whenever I possibly can blow smoke in someone’s face I’m doing it!”

It’s a mixture of tones that’s indicative of the overall production, Sarandon told MTV, insisting that fans who only know Jackson for Lord of the Rings and King Kong are going to be “surprised.”

“I haven’t figured out the tone of the movie, I’m still trying to figure out exactly what it is. It’s going to be a strange jumble of things,” the actress continued. “But Peter Jackson did Heavenly Creatures. It’s [a lot] like that.”

Don’t worry, though, fantasy fans: Sarandon is most excited about the movie’s special effects.

“I think that probably the heaven sequences will work better in the film than they did, for me, in the book,” she said..

Mayor Bloomberg to Make a Cameo in Sex and the City: The Movie

Kim Cattrall may be filming Sex and the City: The Movie purely for the money. But we doubt a certain guest star is making anything for his appearance in the film.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has landed a role in the Sex and the City movie.

He follows in the footsteps of former New York Mayor Ed Koch, who appeared in a Sex and the City episode in 2001 as himself.

Bruce Greenwood, Rachel Nichols Confirmed for Star Trek Movie

Bruce Greenwood has been cast as Christopher Pike, the Starship Enterprise’s first captain, in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek follow-up.

The character of Captain Pike appeared in the original unaired pilot that Gene Roddenberry created. The pilot was rejected by CBS and then shown to NBC, which turned it down, though it liked the concept enough to commission a second pilot.

Pike was later weaved back into Star Trek lore as the ship’s first captain, appearing in a two-part episode.

In other casting news, Rachel Nichols has confirmed to the Toronto Sun that she’s also landed role in the film.

“I’m very restricted on what I’m allowed to say,” she said. “But yes, there’s a good chance you’ll see my shining face in the new Star Trek.”

Jack Nicholson Furious Over The Dark Knight Snub

The movie world is abuzz over Heath Ledger portraying The Joker in The Dark Knight. But one prominent name in Hollywood is far from thrilled over the development.

“I’m furious,” Jack Nicholson told MTV over being left out of the follow-up, considering he originated the role in the original Batman movie.

The actor’s voice rose as he continued:

“They never asked me about a sequel with the Joker. I know how to do that! Nobody ever asked me.”

The main reason Nicholson is so perturbed? The fact that The Joker is incredibly personal for him.

“The Joker comes from my childhood,” he said. “That’s how I got involved with it in the first place. It’s a part I always thought I should play.”

The multiple-time Oscar winner added that Warner Bros. “kind of drove the franchise into the ground,” and that he was unlikely to see The Dark Knight.

Javier Bardem Comments on Woody Allen Movie

Javier Bardem Javier Bardem is receiving rave reviews for his role in No Country for Old Men.

Up next for the intense actor? A new Woody Allen movie. Bardem recently spoke to MTV about the change of roles.

“[Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall play tourists] who are coming to Barcelona, and it’s about relationships,” Bardem said of the film, due in theaters next year. “Penelope Cruz plays [my] ex-wife, and there is a triangle there - but it is much more than that.”

Bardem plays a painter in the film, the basis for which is a major departure for Allen. Most of the dialogue is spoken in Spanish.

“It has both, Spanish and English, but most of the time English,” said Bardem, insisting that it’s actually him and Cruz who have had to do the most adjusting. “Working with a second language is difficult, because improvising is not easy when you have to work in a foreign language.”

Overall, the actor says Allen’s improvisational directing style has been a freeing experience.

“I did have great fun doing it, and a great chance to work, as an actor, with amazing dialogue and amazing circumstances and situations. And I did it all so fast that you don’t have time to think; you have to be really open and just be.”

Cleo Pires: The Next Bond Girl?

In earlier Bond 22 casting news, we reported that Rafael Edholm was rumored to be cast at the villain to Daniel Craig’s James Bond.

Now, word of the next Bond Girl is spreading - and it appears to be Brazilian soap star Cleo Pires, who won the best actress award in the Festival do Rio 2003 for her role in Benjamim.

Cleo Pires

MI6.co.uk, a James Bond fan site, states: “Pires was amongst the final group of actresses competing for the part. If reports hold true, the other finalists from Brazil are Guilhermina Guinle, Rita Guedes and the much-tipped Juliana Paes. It is understood that another round of tests is to take place in the coming days.

Israeli model and actress Moran Atias is reportedly the only non-South American actress left in the running.”
